Hi all, I have recently acquired a 91 3LN that is not running from a friend after it broke down on him. Apparently he was traveling along an the bike started to die/splutter similar to running out of fuel than it died. He was then able to restart it by bump starting and not long after that it died again popping the black plastic bits out of the side of the head and dumping a heap of oil out of there and around the top of the exhaust manifold. The current status is the bike will turn over but not fire. My though was potentially blocked oil galleries pushing up the oil pressure and popping those plugs out however I'm not sure why that would prevent it from starting again. I'm keen to work on this bike as a project and get it back up and running myself, where would you guys suggest starting to diagnose the fault ?
I took a pic yesterday, basically the black plugs popped out (they are back in place now) and you can see the oil has been dumped out of there and over the fins/exhaust. Bike turns over now but no start.
Gday there Start with the basics. The motor needs 3 things to run. Fuel, spark, compression. Unfortunately we really need more information to help diagnose the problem. ie. if its got spark and compression seems good..... I am not sure about the blocked oil returns blowing out the side blocks. From memory the FZR has more than enough return, even through the timing chain port (anyone??) I dont know that blowing that black block out is related to not starting?!?
I shall do a bit more investigation and get back to you guys, thanks
Nathan it sounds a bit serious, to blow the rubber gasket out means you have had compression build up in the crankcase, either the breather port has been blocked or there has been an explosion in there, holed piston etc. I would be check the breather pipes first which comes out of the top of the gearbox, but sadly I think it is the more serious issue as the engine won't run and the speed at which the problem appeared
Finally got a chance to pull the engine apart. Looks like it cooked itself and has holed the two center pistons as well as destroying the bores. What are my options ? Bore out and OS pistons ? - (Didn't get an idea of how deep the gouges are in the bores so this may not be possible). Re-Sleeve ? 2nd hand barrels ? How hard are spares to get for these now days ? I suspect a set of 4 pistons and rings is not going to be a cheap affair ? Perhaps I should think about a complete 2nd hand engine from a wrecker
Nathan here is a link to the yamaha part no. catalogue http://attachments.fzr250.com/FZR250/3L ... umbers.pdf It may be possible to get parts but no doubt they wont be cheap. A running secondhand engine (or complete bike) is the possibly the best option..
The next call should be to (from memory- its been a long time) southern cross motor sports, Victoria. He used to at least have, or have access to, pretty well every part at what seemed reasonable prices.
Getting some prices from Yamaha.. no doubt they will be scary.. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try giving southern cross motor sports a call. Just have to work out what is the most viable $$ wise.. Worst case.. I have a RZ350 motor that would go in the nicely
Crikey!! I rode a RZ350 of my mate's 30+ years ago. They were quuuiiiick in a straight line... I would like to see that in the FZR frame..
