Hi Guys,

Well im new here and this is my first post Yaaay!

Well i just bought my first road bike today and im so excited to say the least, i read the 'buying a first bike check' etc and everything seemed good and took the bike for a ride and it seemed great, heaps of power lots of grunt lots of speed

The previous owner said that the carb needed a tune and that an 'o-ring' or something needed replacing. Although i could not tell that there was a problem whilst riding he insisted that something needed to be done to the carb. Does anyone have an idea as to what this 'o-ring' could be or what it could be causing? I have only taken the bike for a short ride so far as it was riding today so am yet to see exactly what its doing, but it seems to run fine. My only suspicion thus far is that it might be using too much fuel? When i was test riding it he said we might need to put some more petrol in the bike i looked in the tank it wasnt exactly empty but far from full aswell, so i don't know whether he was just being cautious or what but i think this could possibly be a reason or fault?

I have yet to contact the seller about the issue as my phone has not been working! GRRrrr!

So if anyone knows what this o-ring is or does it would be much appreciated! Like i said i cannot see or hear anything wrong with the bike and i really dont want to take it to a bike shop to get 'fixed' only to be had a lend of and someone taking advantage of my lack of knowledge!

    Any help much appreciated!

    Thanks Guys,

    JB

Ok, sounds good. Don't know about what O ring would be in need of replacements.. There is a copy of the service manual (Unfortunately Japanese) and a parts number list in the How To section if you want to have a look.

hi - the owner may be reffering to the carbs rubber o-rings that mount between the carbs and the intake manifold..there were a set on ebay the other day but i cant seem to find em now. if they are perished and leaking then the bike would be drawing in extra air...meaning its been tuned richer to compensate - thus the poor economy..

Thank you both very much for your opinions! I did download all those manuals but saw that they were in Japanese or something and immediately closed it, lol!

The latter reply seemed to be hopeful! The bike wasn't blowing any smoke and didn't smell to 'petrolly' but ill keep an eye on the fuel consumption!

What fuel economy can i expect to get from the 15L tank? (i think it takes 15L) I would imagine it should be something around the 150-200km to a tank? Taking it easy of course!

I think from memory the guy i bought it off said that it was only like a 100-150 dollar fix! Do you think its worth, whilst taking it to a shop getting the carbs cleaned and balanced whilst getting this ring replaced? After all i wouldn't get too far if it wasn't running as efficient as it absolutely could.

The manuals are japanese but the pictures are helpfull and a lot of numbers/measurements are usefull..

Before embarking on any expensive repairs, try running a tank of juice thru and see if you get 160-200k to reserve.. That would be about normal...

    Hey guys,

well finally i put a whole tank of petrol through my girl and too my amazement she went upto 185km until i had to flick her over to reserve. (Was funny, i thought there was something wrong with the bike haha just would pick up speed or anything hehe).

She needs a bit of TLC though and good ass service, but i think she will pull through!

Does anyone know what sort of ball park figures im looking at (roughly) for a full service on the bike? ie oil, oil filter, plugs, leads, carb balance and tune and possibly valve stem timing???

    and one more quickie. lol

Cold starting is nasty.. She really doesnt like starting cold.. It almost seems as if she is flooding herself? This seems to happen whenever it gets cold ie 2 hours after riding...

Once shes warmed up she starts no worries!

Its just getting to that warm stage haha.

Any ideas? Hints? Do other people use choke on cold starts? Do people use the throttle at all when starting? Do people pulse the start button? Or hold until she starts? Does it matter if the bikes on an angle? ie on stand?
ANything would be a great help!

a basic service should be around 150$ dollars to 200$ odd depending on who does it...best just to ask the place you are thinking of taking it to...getting the valve clerances done (is that what you meant?) will cost a bit more... id get the carbs tuned right first - that will also add a bit more labour $. with starting ive found a few tricks - first make sure your fuel tap is set to either full or reserve (depending on the amount in the tank) before switing on - as when you turn on it will prime the carbs with the fuel pump. If the carbs are set right you should have the choke on full when cold - NO throtle and it should start - dont forget to turn the choke of though! If the bike is still warm/hot then no choke and a small amount of throttle if it wont start after a second of turning over... from what others have written (and from experience) these bikes are very easy to flood and/or foul the plugs... have fun - im getting mine serviced atm so i will see if i can improve my 100 km to the tank running! (very rich i know)
