i hope somebody can help me here, i am looking for the name of the part that is connected from the positive side of the battery(if that makes sense),my FZR has been sitting for just over a year now, took it apart a bit and gave it a clean etc, did a bit of a service but now when i try to start it this part makes a ticking sound, can here the fuel pump etc working, cant run start it yet as i am trying to get chain sprockets, back disk and pads for it, so in the mean time i just wanted to get her started again. Later
The thing that sits there clicking when you try (unsuccessfully) to start with a flat battery is the starter relay.
dontz is right, while your getting a sproket, disk and pads pickup a new battery for it <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s --> Then your notice the ticking stop
i have got a new battery (fully charged), but i still get the ticking sound in the starter relay. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
Does it tick continuously when you have the start button pressed, or only once when pressed and once when released??? Continuous means bad battery, bad main connections or, battery earth connection bad. Only once per press means bad starter motor, bad starter relay, bad connection to starter motor, bad earth at starter.. Try jump starting with a good car battery.
HI dave, it only ticks once when pressed in then released, i have tracked down a guy here in South Africa that is stripping a 2KR, he has all the parts i need ie the starter motor,starter relay etc, are these parts comon from model to model? if so then i will buy all the parts needed to source my problem, you can never have enough spares anyway. Buy the way i did get it to swing for a short while the other day, but it didnt fire? Thanks
I could not guarantee the parts are identical. Check further by using a multimeter (or a 12v test lamp) by checking if power gets thru the starter relay when trying to start. Put one lead on the battery negative and the other on the live side of the relay. Should have power all the time. Then connect to the starter motor side of the relay and see if the power gets thru when trying to start.
