    Can anyone point me towards where my regulator is? I have a 3LN1 (1989). I have read that it is under the rear side fairing mounted to the frame below the seat. Some posts say it's on the left, some say it's on the right. I'm not really sure where it is...I am thinking of buying the one below from http://www.motorcycle-parts.com.au but I can't find anything that looks like it on my bike.

    Here are pics of my bike with it's fairings off.
    Left side - There are two little black boxes hanging off the frame. The plugs on them don't look anything like the one in the pic of the one I might buy.

    Right side - Couldn't see anything here, a few wires running to the rear light, the rest running along the frame to the front of the bike

    Under seat - Here there is this black box, it doesn't seem to be able to open, at first I thought it must be the regulator, but it has many more wires coming out of it than the one I might purchase so I'm not too sure.

    I have also read posts saying it is under the tank near the starter??

    *scratching head* Ok, so I don't remember where the silly thing is. It looks like this:

    <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.gdlcycles.com/asp1/modetails.asp?ItemID=RK_10-417">http://www.gdlcycles.com/asp1/modetails ... =RK_10-417</a><!-- m -->

    This is the old 4-pin fry-o-matic VR; many people are upgrading to the 5-pin VR used on the '95 to '05 FZR/YZF/R6/R1 (looks like what you posted with no cord and a six-pin socket, only 5 of which are used). It takes a (very) little re-wiring. What you posted looks to be the best of both worlds - the heavy finning and definite, distinct ground wire, with a 4-pin plug for plug'n'chug installation.

    The RR on the 2KR looks like a relay. On your 2nd photo you have circled the CDI unit. Directly below that on the bottom edge of that photo are two smallish boxes, One is the RR, I think it the one with NIPPON DENSO written on it. Should have 4 wires on it, and 3 will probably be one color.

    The new RR shown should work OK. The three yellow wires go to the alternator, the red wire to the battery, and the black to the bike frame. The old RR would be wired identical to that.

    it's more in front of the battery and under the tank right in the middle of the bike under the fule pump

    edit: on the pic of the left side of your bike bettween the cowling and fule pump there are three white wires those wires got to it.(there is also one red.)

    In front of the rear brake reservoir is a plug with 3 whites and possibly a red. Looks about right.

    the 3ln reg bolts directly onto the main aluminium frame just in front of the rear shock mount. the tdm reg would work as it is pinned the same and would be a good upgrade from the stock unit, but mounting it will require fabrication.

    as dontz said, this is the right reg.

    the plug with the three wires goes to the stator one way and into the main loom the other.
