well got her back about a month ago after 7 months of a stupid mechanic telling me "give me time and she'll be fixed"

    issue
1: no compression = bye bye valves = bye bye engine
2: cheaper for me to get a 2nd hand engine rather than reco the engine
3: original mechanic treating me like an idiot
4: i had a car and had no money at that stage to get a new engine

so, from july - early december 2008, had bike sitting in his garage which was cool with me, then i rang him mid december to tell him i have the money, i want a new engine. he then advices me to give him time so that he can pull the engine apart and fix it himself.

i tell him that i'll give him until christmas to find out what he can do. I ring a week before christmas and gives me the "i'm busy" bullshit. so i wait till after new years and tell him that I'm buying new engine don't worry about looking at the original engine, which he understood (i really doubted that he did). mid jan, i get the engine, deliver it to his shop. he tells me "it'll be ready in a week", so i leave.

ring up exactly a week later and again gives me the "i'm busy cos it's super bikes". so i keep my cool. it's already feb, my dad's come back from working in kalgoorlie, asks me where the bike is. i told him it's still in the shop, so he blows a gasket, and goes down to the shop himself, picks up the engine and tows the bike down to a diff mechanic.

next mechanic slaps the engine in, unfortunately had a hard time starting up the 2nd engine, so dad takes it home to try and start it up. meanwhile, first mechanic didnt give us a few fairings and the tank cover so we go back to his shop to recover it, while we were there, my old man speaks to him and in the midst of the convo the mechanic adds that depending on how long the 2nd engine is sitting at the wreckers, it may have really sticky valves.

so dad goes back home, hooks up the bike to a bigger battery and tries for 2 days to start up the bike. Presto, the bike starts!

Paid 750 for the 2nd hand engine, 150 to the 2nd mech for installing engine and servicing her and 2 flipped birds to the first mechanic.

I have a feeling that a lot of bike mechanics are just not up to speed with the older bikes, or anything that's a bit out of the ordinary. I always look at what I can do myself first, and professional help second.
