Hi guys, I believe my 1990 3ln-3 engine is rooted. After a really nasty blender noise I have shredded metal in both intake and exhaust manifolds of cylinder 3 and the respective spark plug electrode is melted/snapped.

I think that it would be extremely expensive to repair this damage and it's not something I could do so I am looking for a replacement engine or spares bike with an engine.

I am willing to spend proper money if I find the right engine or bike.

I am located in Cheltenham, Victoria.

Thanks and I look forward to getting the little fizzer back on the road.

Hi, i am in sunshine.

is a 2KR motor the same??

I have a motor here but no carbs.

Bring some carbs and you can hear it run. Havent heard it run but i am told it does so we best make sure. Its still in the frame with everything on it except the carbs.

See how it runs then we can talk turkey.

Cheers, Bob.

Thanks for the reply bob but I think 2kr is quite different to 3ln, that was the big change. I have carbs but doubt they'd fit your engine, thanks anyway dude.

Re: Wanted: 3-ln Engine or parts bike

Im not so sure that it wont fit.
Looking through the parts listings the cyl block is the same part number for all bikes.

The sump on the 3LN1 is the same as the 2KR but the 3LN2 & 3 use a different one with the oil filter on the side.

The heads are a different part number but that could be for any reason. Just the slightest change.
The clamps for the inlet rubbers on the head side are the same part 2KR - all models 3LN but the inlet rubbers are different, different air box and i would say different carbs.

The exhaust gaskets are the same on the 3LN 1 3 and 5. 6 and 7 are different.
The EXUP chamber is different on the 3LN. Different casting.

Engine casings are different but the crank bearings are different so i expected that.
Sprocket cover is the same
Starter drive cover is the same
Inner and outer for the stator is the same part
Clutch cover is the same on all bikes.

From those things i would say that the motor will drop striaght in a 3LN.
You could spend hours noting all the differences via part numbers. If i had the access im sure a few of the different parts would superseed as well. But the main bits, the engine block is the same part, the crank cases look the same with the same mounting lugs and the valve cover gasket is the same part. All that it would need would be the 3LN3 sump and inlet rubbers.

Bob.

Thanks for all this champ but if possible I would like to keep it all 3-ln because I will be doing the swap myself and want the least difficulty haha.
I will keep your engine in mind and if I cant source a 3-ln motor, I'll follow it up.
All the best.

Hi - saw the saga about your 3LN needing surgery and wanted to know if you'd seen my 3LN for sale just now in the the For Sale Wanted forum - I have had it on ebay but the fact its a naked seems to throw a few prospective buyers even though though i have lowered price accordingly to $2,400 - seeing as your over the border would you be interested in the bike for $2,200 and this would allow for the Ferguson's freight as I am in Adelaide.

The bike is my week-end ride and the engine is as tight as a drum, no leaks and has new radiator, battery and I have just given pipes nice matt VHT paint. Has chrome aftermarket muffler and just serviced the exup cables so valve system is aok.

Anyway good to hear of another 3LN enthusiast. I bought this as i was looking for an RD and it just reminded me so of those old two strokes having so much grunt. Good fun.

The details and pix of my 3LN are posted here on the for sale forum.

Cheers

Nick

Re: Wanted: 3-ln Engine or parts bike

Ok Guys thanks for your suggestions, but I've acquired a running parts bike.

I bought a 1991 3LN-3 From Yamwreck in Ashwood for $1500. It is unregistered but has a running engine, and a whole set of red virgin mobile fairings (some scratches and cracks).

I pulled the busted engine from my broken bike today - Surprisingly easy! I'll be making a thread with pictures to follow the process of me swapping the engine over and the final vehicle.

Bye for now.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.. Presume you might sell the bits you don't want and reduce your costs.

Ill be keeping the spares bike untill I sell the bike when Im off restrictions this time next year. The reason is in case I break something on mine I wont have to go to a wrecker, and I can try my hand at painting one of the sets of fairings.
