ive got this damage on my speedo (1992 3ln fzr 250) and now ive seen it on at least 5 others and its annoying me. what do you reckon it is. it definatly looks like heat damage but its all in the same place for all the ones ive seen with it on.
only seen on 3lns not 2krs

my bad i was waiting for someone to say the 2kr had them too. im pretty sure they dont make them like that cos ive also seen others which dont have that damage. maybe its got sometihing to do with when there imported. when i first saw it because its close location to the odometer i thought it had been tampered with it. you know wound it back

I can only assume it is either mechanical i.e. The clutch lever hits it at full lock

    or

Thermal. i.e. the sunlight reflects off the inside of the screen at certain angle and focuses on the part in question. MY bike (the Suzuki SV) with the fairing has a known problem with that melting the tacho face.

Stand behind the bike with a strong torch and see if you can get a focus effect on the dash when shining at the screen

haha. i bet they didnt think of things like that when they were designing...
suppose its just one more exciting thing about it; ride it on a sunny day and you could burst into flames! awsome!!

It is really only a problem when you are parked, and the sun is relatively low and behind the bike.

Here is a pic of an SV tacho. I have seen worse pics though.

well i tried the whole clutch lever hitting it and that definatley wasn't the problem. even your glove wouldn't touch it in that spot. so i gess its ones for myth busters. the sun light idea didn't hold much credibility when you first mentioned it but ive seen much weirder things than that so who am i to question physics. ive never opened one of these this up b4 so i dont know if theres a electrical fault occuring.

Its the sunlight refracting through the screen onto the clocks. Some screens and bikes are worse than others. Google Puig screens melting issues and you'll see what i mean. I work at a Suzuki dealership and we've had PLENTY of SV's come back with melted clocks. Pretty much all the aftermarket screen manufacturers issue a warning with their screens now (indemnity).
