Ok so i noticed my back tyre was a bit flat today before i went out. 'no probs' i thought ill just pump it up at the servo down the road.

So I rode up and began pumping it up but noticed it only had 8psi in it :\ thought that was strange but continued to pump it up. i put it up to my normal pressure (38-40psi) then i heard a loud PSSSSSSSSSSS sound. rolled the bike forward a bit and found a small rip, about 1 cm long going across the tread. Took it straight home.

So what i was wondering can a bike tyre be repaired like a car? As in can i take it to a bike shop and they can fix it or will i be up for a new tyre, also what a repair would cost? The rip is in the centre of the tread (nothing on the walls of the trye). I think i ran over some glass or something. Also would this be safe to ride straight to a place to fix/change the tyre? (i hope so because i have no other way right now)

Hey buddy. I had a huge builder's nail puncture my rear tyre. I took the rear wheel off and the shop reparied it for like $30AUD. I;m not sure about yours, I dont know if they can fix rips and such. If you can borrow a car, id pull the wheel and see what they can do. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, but i cant borrow a car. I think I'll have to call a place to fix it on Monday. I checked it this morning and seeing as the pressure has dropped (id guess 15-20 psi) it has stopped leaking, so the rubber must have pressed back together.

It should be fine for the short trip to wherever (theres a few places close by), or at least i hope, don't really have alot of choice. Even if i could get a car i don't have a stand for the back wheels and honestly have no idea how to take it off.

I only referred to it as a rip because there was nothing in tyre when i looked at it. Its just like a normal puncture minus the object that caused it inside (hence why i think it was glass)

Cheers

Hey, last time I had a puncture the tyre shop told me I had to take the wheel off and give that to them (mainly so they aren't responsible for tipping your bike over). But you're right, they should be able to just patch it up like a car tyre. Good luck

They said they are gonna have a look at it and its either gonna be 77 to fix or 190 for a new tyre (note: thats fitted to my bike, not bringing in the tyre by itself)

Its the first place that got back to me so ill go with them. Hope they can repair it, its still got a good amount of tread on it :\

All fixed now cost 70 bucks but that was on the bike, as i rode it there. Id just like to say the initial 3 minute ride on the almost flat tyre was terrifying...

I knew the pressure was low but when i went around a corner (barely leaning) the back end started to squirm around and felt really unstable... got to the nearest servo and it had 3 psi in it :O pumped it up then went into ipswich and it was fine but wow the first bit was nerve racking (i wouldnt of rode it but i had no choice)

Don't want to do that again..

Yeah it really is a good idea to have at least one car in your household. That'ts downright dangerous.
Glad it turned out ok but $70 seems expensive.

yeah i thought so too at first but then i realised the extra cost would have been the labour to take the wheel off and put it back on.

I do have cars around but i don't have a car license so i cant use them (yes i have my bike license) and my mates either were working or don't have a license themselves.

Very lucky that they repaired the tyre. Not such a problem with nail holes.

If it was a big tear I would not like the thought of it giving way at speed.
