I have a single headlight 3LN that I bought broken and have fixed it up and got it registered. It is since getting it registered that I discovered this problem. The battery is not recieving charge (I think) and it doesn't matter whether I have the headlights on or not (although with the headlights on, it drains the battery much faster).

This came to a head this morning riding to work, it cut out (no response from throttle whatsoever, and just decelerated until at a standstill). I could start it by push starting, but as soon as I engaged friction point, it cut out. I am thinking it is either the stator, or the rectifier, does anyone know how to test these to see if they are at fault? Also, on a side note, when it has been working, coming to a stop quickly has been causing it to stall. Any idea how to fix this issue? The carbies seem to be balanced but I am not sure.

The original rectifier in these things is a tiny little thing that gets too hot too often and ends up dying. Mine was replaced years ago by one out of a Suzuki something thats huge and has cooling fins. Any three phase motorcycle regulator will do.

Its most likely stuffed.

You should be able to see at least 13V across your battery when you rev to something like 6k RPM, if your not your reg is most likely the problem. Read the book to check, but I think if you measure AC phase to phase on the output of the stator you should see close to 20VAC. If you do, regulator is stuffed, if you don't, magneto is stuffed and you'll need a new stator.

Definitely check the regulator, more than likely the problem.

Thanks heaps for the replies guys, turns out the problem with my bike was a bit more noob than your suggestions I rebuilt the engine and in my haste to get it on the road I may have missed connecting a few cables I rode it all weekend adding up around 500km with the lights on and still haven't had to change over the battery, so that was my problem...
Now all I have to do is fix my idling problem and she will be perfect
