Hello all, my first post here and unfortunately asking for help!

I bought the bike to use as a bit of a winter hack to keep the muck off my other bike. Bought it quite cheap a coupla months back knowing it needed a little TLC and put it to one side until I needed it. I want to start using it now but I cannot get the thing started for love nor... effort!!!

First I thought It was turning over a bit slow. Looked at the battery and it sure looked old and had a roll of cardboard jammed in the filler hole for one of the cells! Stuck on a new one. Now it turns over faster and all the lights are brighter, the exup servo sounds better for it too.

I took the tank off and was sure that I couldn't hear the fuel pimp 'tick' like they do. Took it out and tested it on the old battery and it did actually work Got my trusty voltmeter out and sure enough it's not getting any volts.

Now my question! I have the FZR400 manual and it shows a fuel pump relay - where is this on the 250???

Also with the FZR400 the fuel pump relay looks like it takes it's power from the CDI unit, which also has a relay! The "Ignition Circuit Cut Off Relay" - Does the FZR250 have this??? The bike turns over no problem just wont start. I have refitted the fuel pump to the bike and fitted a new fuel filter while I was at it.

Bike doesn't sound like it fires at all, should really check for a spark too I suppose.
Sorry for all the questions just want to get it running!

Low battery problems will allow cranking over but not enough volts to make ignition module fire spark. Check by jump start with known good battery.

Dave it has a new battery and is cranking over fine enough. Took the tank off and the fuel pump is getting the 5seconds of 12V when you turn the ignition on so I am ruling out the relays. The bike is also sparking. Going to fit a new set of plugs this coming weekend.

Removed the airbox top and air filter to take a v quick look at the carbs. The sliders do move easily. I'm thinkingI will have to bite the bullet and pull the carbs completely off and check them for gum and varnish. Not looking forward to that

Ok on all the info. If you get no response with the new plugs check that you have fuel in the float bowls by opening the float bowl drain valves and even checking the levels using the clear tube method viewtopic.php?f=31&t=3508

If all looks good then remove the float bowls and check that the jets are not blocked. The jets are little brass plugs with small holes in the centre. You can see them once the float bowls are off and you can screw them out out to check and clean.

Depends on the model - I believe 2KRs run out of fuel before reaching 'Reserve' level without a fuel pump. 3LNs should be able to drain the tank under gravity alone.

Today... ...Success!

Well it runs any how.

When I drained the fuel out of the tank I put some of it in my 350 YPVS as I only have 1 fuel canister and needed to drain more from the fzr. Well after that the YPVS started giving me agro starting aswell so I suspected contaminated or old fuel maybe the cause. Drained the tanks on both bikes and managed to drain 3 of the carbs on the fzr. Put 5 litres of fresh super unleaded in both bikes. I changed 3 of the spark plugs (couldnt get to no3 easily at all) on the FZR too. YPVS starts easy as it should. FZR is starting easier but I dont think its been run for 9-12 months or so so it's running a bit lumpy.

Now it runs I'm going to change the engine oil and filter before I give it the berries out on the road . Got a K&N oil filter for it cheap but whats the best engine oil for these little screamers????

(a much happier) Chris
