Have bought the above bike and just waiting for delivery. It's a 305 but looking on the net have found that it is similar to some YDS 250 models of the same period. Hoping to get as much info I can on these bikes to assist on any repairs/rebuilds I'll be doing. Any advise or tips appreciated.
to the community. Sounds like a cool project...just a quick read about these and it seems the capacity is the only real difference. What kind of condition is the one youre waiting on? And we let the Ninja 300 guys grace our forum so a 305cc is more than welcome
Thanks GreyImport. Bike in original condition. Have only seen pictures so far - but told runs well, starts easily. All parts there - usual "patina" present for an old bike. Was surfing the net as was thinking of getting an old bike as a project and bought this on an impulse. Cant wait for it to arrive, but have my eyes open re the amount of work maybe required. Just hope I haven't bitten of more than I can chew. Hope you don't get sick of the questions that I'll no doubt be asking!
when you rebuild the motor replace the gear stop[ bolt behind clutch case big cog with a high tensile one as a head came off a bolt in a yd2 and i slid down the road in 69.very undignified.lol. can only be done with gearbox apart as stop is loose inside once bolt undone. if replacing bearings there is a labrynthe seal and bearing in centre of crank. later yd series pistons fit if gudgeon hole is reamed.pitons had a habit of retaining pin to stop ring rotation coming out.

Join the VJMC (vintage japanese motorcycle club) as there are a few of them on there and plenty of helpful advise on how to restore bikes and where to get parts.

Good buy there See Jay. Although the seat doesn't look right and the blinkers look to be from a later model the bike looks to be a very good start for a resto. Readford's motorcycles in Dubbo have some NOS for Yamahas, as does US Ebay. Good luck with your project.
Yeah seat definately not right. Is chunkier and I think they all came black and white (could be wrong re color). The bike came with a box of bits and pieces - indicators (originals? ?) are in there but one lens is broken. Thanks for info re parts. There seems to be a few options online - hopefully can find all I need/want. Thanks for all the positive comments gents!
Hey SeeJay Cool bike, think you have secured yourself a winner. Many years ago a chap I went to high school with got this same bike brand new. Your comment re some parts seem correct apart from the seat. I am positive that his seat was black, not white and black. His bike was purchased in Europe, France to be exact, perhaps European deliveries were different to those in America where the seats were 2 tone. Not that it matters I guess, was a long time ago. Am looking forward to see more of your 60's classic as are many others. Good luck with it!
Thanks Phil. I hope you're right about the seat as I prefer the all black look, just needs less padding on the back half. Was looking for something to convert to a cafe racer style bike when I found this one, but am leaning towards a more conventional resto at this stage as the style almost looks too good to mess with.
there are 2 yd1 model at the nabiac motorbike museum on the lhs shed after you go in.if you can get there you will se these unrestored and original.
Unfortunately am in Perth but just had a look at their website and looks very interesting. Definately now on my list of places to visit!
Make sure u keep us posted with your progress and plenty of pictorial support (we will perfect your pic uploading ! ) It would make a nice cafe but would also be nice to see it kept "original".....
Hey SeeJay I'm with you, that bike of yours is a little gem and a more conventional resto would be my choice also. Don't think it will take too much to get her in a grand condition, think risky and myself will be close watchers so keep the photos coming. Good luck mate
