Well my bike has sounded like it has been 'missing' a bit recently, especially in rain, and I still had 1 spark plug to change so I got my tools together to give the ignition an overhaul.

I had a bit of luck with an '85 GSX400R when the basket wouldn't start. I ended up replacing the coils and leads for 1999 R1 items as these had very similar connections on the LT side and presto it went second time!

So for my 3LN3 I decided maybe the same trick might help out. I sourced a set of 99 R1 coils on ebay for quite cheap. Part number 4XV-00 J0313. They are a straight swap for the 3LN items - literally bolt for bolt and connector for connector! The only thing I wasnt 100% sure of was if the HT leads and caps would line up ok.

    New coils as bought

R1 coils fitted in place - note white sealant to deter water ingress

The old HT leads and caps were shot! 2 of the leads just popped out of the caps - 20year old originals maybe!!

One problem I did have is that the plug for cylinder number 3 didnt want to come out The plug spanner just seemed to spin over the top. Really confused. I am sure this plug is the reason for the now much smaller amount of misfire that can be heard from the exhaust. God only knows how that plugs been left because it wont come out...........

The plug leads for cylinders 1 & 2 went in fine but 3 & 4 were a bit more involved. Because the R1 HT caps are much taller, they go much nearer to the thermostat housing and so have to be routed slightly different than normal. It all worked out good though.

So there - you can use 10 year younger R1 coils on your 3LN if you need to

Good work. Different bike but similar idea- overhauling electrical sytem, and slightly different direction.

1994 zx9r everything was patched up, poor connections, last owner fried a coil because of poor spark connection.

Plugs replaced, original HT wires were good, just shortened massively to create the shortest but neatest curve I could, though 2 leads could have been a touch shorter. New dynacoils installed, new original spark caps from kwakka, soldered connections between HT leads and coil caps. makes for a far stronger system.

The good thing about Dyna coils is you can replace the HT lead. With the original coils it is moulded into the coil housing. You can change the plug cap but often on older Yammies it's the HT lead that needs replacing - meaning expensive new coils

I have a spare set of these R1 4XV coils now lol. First I bid on a pair for £15, no more. Then I spotted a set for £0.99!!! So I put a £1 bid on them too, I didnt get outbid on either lol! I am sure I will use them

So which years of R1 do the coils fit from exactly?

The Yamaha R1, model 4XV, is I think a 1999 -2001 bike. I think however that all coils on R1's that have carbs are the same. At some point (??2004-2005??) the R1's went over to fuel injection. When they did I think they also went over to the 'coil in the HT cap' design. Obviously these cannot be used on out 250's.

Like I said - the 4XV coils I used were a bolt for bolt and connector for connector straight swap.

I've always wondered if there was a way those coil on plug systems could be modified to suit older models. Takes care of a lot of potential losses....

In the US, the '02 model R1 first had the Coil-On-Plug ignition and EFI.

A fellow over at FZROnline modded his 600 to use Honda(?) COPs, it worked, but I don't know how long it lasted - you now have two coils in parallel, which will halve the effective resistance and double the current through the coil driver transistors in the TCI box - and they weren't too rugged to begin with.

Be very careful if you decide to go this route to select the appropriate part; many of the COPs out there are for CDI, not TCI, and have a primary resistance 1/10th that of the stock FZR coil. Run two CDI COPs in parallel, and you now have TWENTY times the current running through your TCI - just not for very long ...

Heh - it can be done, but it's not to be approached lightly. Unless you include shipping your TCI box to me for a driver repair / upgrade as part of your base project cost ...
