Hey im new here and I've finally got my first bike, which I bought as a project so there's a few things it needs before I can start riding. Just thought I'd introduce myself I'm new to bikes so I'll be on here alot probably.
This is my FZR250
[IMG]

As of right now I have been told by the previous owner that the only things It needs to get it running is a battery, the radiator replaced because he said when it sits still it will start to over heat but while driving it cools back down. And also the front shocks have a bit of rust spots on them and so it tears the boots so they need to be replaced. It's been sitting for a while so I am also going to replace all the fluids and spark plugs and anything else it may need.

Also I haven't had a really good chance to check (I've only brought it home a few hours ago) but the rear brake doesn't seem to engage. I'll probably end up just replacing the lines and bleeding the system anyways because as it being my first bike I want it to be able to stop when I need it to or I'll freak out lol

Is there any place in particular here in Australia or online I should look for these parts?

If it overheats when sitting then check that the cooling fan is running when it gets hot, if not it could be the temperature switch or fan is faulty. Unlikely to be a faulty radiator.

Rear brake is hydraulic, check that it has enough brake fluid. or it might need bleeding, pistons might have seized, seals might be shot in the master cylinder. Check everything.

Thanks, today I got around to tearing it down a bit to start cleaning and inspecting bits. I talked to the old owner today and I found it's been sitting for close to 2 years so it's gonna need some serious maintenance done until I get a few things fixed Im not gonna try turning it on so I can't check the over heating issue yet. But I will replace the coolant.
So I have a few questions
I may be missunderstanding this all but my vin says it's an 88 but it also says it's a 2KR in a few places. Does that make it a 86 then? I just need to know cause I'm trying to source parts for it.
I'm
Assuming once I get that question answered then I'll be able to figure out which oil and air filter part number I need (I'm trying really hard not to ask. I know google is my friend I can search my self)
And also I want to replace the fuel filter I've seen at super cheap and auto barn they have some that look like the one I already have can I just take it there and find one that looks like it will fit or does it have to be a certain one?

Here's a shot of the disassemble I've done today

now thats a familiar sight, I've got to work outside as well make sure you put a tarp down under bike to catch bolts and washers,
Air Filter- 1HX-14451-00.--Oil Filter 4X7- 13447-00,.. Fuel filter - 1FK - 24560-00 should still be able to source these from Yamaha, you maybe be able to wash your air filter and use again depending on just how dirty it is, can't see if you have an exup setup but not with that exhaust by the look of things it is an 88 from what i gather no differences in bike until you go to 3LN (frame, headlights, carbies) and from what i've seen so far 2krs have single front brake disc
one other thing to do is get rid of all fuel from tank and drain carbies as well if been sitting for 2 years you may need to strip carbies to clean but i'd try and start it first might get lucky (might) and run with new fuel. Fuel filter from supercheap is slghtly bigger if you want to use that one you'll have to zip tie it on but hell of a lot cheaper than original Yamaha,
Front wheel bearings if needed NTN 6301LLU from CBC bearings $24.20 inc Gst for the pair
don't be afraid to ask all questions will be answered here on this site

Awesome thanks for all that. Yeah I've taken off the tank and drained it and I may try the carbi as well but I think I'll try without cleaning that first, less work for me if it doesn't need it. The air filter seems a bit gross on the bottom I believe it was where it has a foam ring around it, the foam is really squishy and actually just falls apart And comes off if you rub it so I would like to get a new one if I can find one.
Has anyone tried Clark rubber for getting a new seat made? Mines in pretty poor shape and I saw a commercial last night for them and thought it might be a good idea and I can just reupholster it my self.

Also will the foot pegs on the newer model fzr250s fit my one? One of mine is a bit bent up and I found someone selling one off a newer one

Thanks
Elliot

The 2KR models ('86-'88) have a steel frame. '86 and '87 were not fitted with the exup valve.

Serial numbers and pictures of original paint schemes can be found here viewtopic.php?f=29&t=3636

So at 88 they fitted the exup valve. Which as far as I know I do NOT have so then mine isn't an 88 even though it says it is? So it's either a 86 or 87. What's a good tell tale sign of it having an exup valve or not?

Thanks

Look at the serial number stamped on the neck of the bike.

The EXUP valve is a big box looking thing where the four exhaust headers join into one pipe. Look underneath the bike near the gear change lever. It has a pulley on the side behind a cover. This is where the cables attach

FZR250 and a red MR2, great combo, I have the same . My mr2 is now useless though, I only track it.

I have grey import '88 (by the registration paper) and I don't have EXUP either, my the serial number says I have a '87, I don't know why it says '88 on my paper.

See on the far right it says 1988
[IMG]

But then on the frame where it's stamped in it says 2kr and on this sticker it says 2kr

Good news!!!

Hey everyone so for the past week I haven't touched the bike and I got tired of walking past it every day so I pulled it out from under the house went to drain the carbs and nothing came out. So I put the fuel tank back on filled it up and tried starting it. (I had plans to replace all the filters and oil and coolant before I even tried starting but I couldn't resist) it took a bit of time of cranking it but it eventually kicked over! As it was idling it was blowing a good amount of smoke and I was hoping it is just old fuel gunk burning off but I turned it off incase it was something more serious. Then I noticed I left the choke on and tried starting it again and it had a bit of trouble at the beginning again but eventually it started again this time no smoke nothing unusual at all really.
I did notice the fan didnt turn on and I know the coolant levels a bit low so I'm going to go get some to top off now. But I'd like to know if anyone has wired the fan up on theirs to run it constantly so It won't over heat. As I'm writing this I just realized I think Johnnyangel told me has done this. If not it was someone else I can't remember.

Anyways I'm just happy I've got it started. So far I've paid $200.00 for the bike. And have used a bit of de greaser and some of my time and now have a running bike. Pretty good deal.

Here's a video of it running

Any info on wiring up the fan would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I'm in Quebec, Canada, it's a bit far from Australia . My MR2 (jdm import too) isn't my DD so I don't care, I bought it with an already super stiff suspension, since then I blew the stock engin so I put a gen3 (stock except for a downpipe and intercooler).

And my fan on my bike doesn't kick either, I'll install a manual switch soon, I don't really know how to yet.

Mine has JIC coilovers but that's all the suspension thats been done I'd like some beefier sway bars, Mines a 92 with the upgraded ct20b turbo, bigger intercooler, 3inch full exhaust, apexi intake, and like I said soon the fuel system will be upgraded I have all the parts just keep putting off taking it to the shop to get it done lol I'll let you know how it goes on the dyno when I finally get around to it.

Yeah I haven't had a chance to look at the fan too much but I figured I could just re wire it to something that stays on an either have it on all the time or put a switch in so I can turn it on and off

My FZR had a switch installed so the fan could be turned on manually when required, which was not often. You really only need it running when idling around town where you have to sit at traffic lights or in really slow traffic.. Also riding in those conditions with the fan running causes the battery to go flat as the bike does not generate enough electrical power to run everything at low revs.

I'd like to hook up a switch cause the guy I got it from said it was start over heating a bit when in traffic and one time he was stuck in traffic next to a forest fire lol so the air was quite warm just sitting there it wasn't getting any cooler, in situations like that you can't really just speed up to get some air flow going so ill need the fan to work, I've delt with overheated cars and its a nightmare prevention prevention prevention lol

Hey so its been a while since I've been on here. Only cause I haven't done anything with the bike in a while. I removed the carbs and have cleaned out 3 of them and the only one that I really needed to clean (it wasn't draining anything when in the bike) I can't get the screws off they are so soft they just strip. So I have a screw extractor so I can get them out but I don't have any to replace them. Where's the best place to get replacement screws? Could I just go to a hardware store or auto parts store and grab anything that is the same size? Or is there some sort of importance to them that I would have to go to a Yamaha dealer? I just don't want to do anything to damage the carbs seeing as they are selling on eBay for more than what I paid for the bike.

You could simply slot the screws with a dremel, or just drill the heads off; you might be able to grab them with a set of Vice-Grips. Replacement screws CAN be sourced from the local hardware / auto parts store, but be very careful when using plated stainless steel socket-head cap screws in soft cast aluminum! The original super-soft brass screws (with Phillips heads) are basically "torque fuses"; they strip so you don't tear the threads out of those $$$ carb bodies.

Once you get the screws out make sure that you use a bit of anti-seize compound on the threads, or at least a bit of grease.
