I was starting the engine I heard a clunk and now it's locked up it didn't actualy start this happened on the started motor there was a slight rattle starting to develop before hand but only at idle help what could it be? This bike has been in storage for 5 years or more as I'm trying to get it on the road again new battery oil change coolant etc all done.
All good now i did try that first but no change so i turned the crank from the magneto moved ok started straight away on the starter motor, What may have caused this is it likely to happen again. Was also thinking about the rattle noise coming from the bottom of the motor the bike has 30k on it new oil is this the norm for a bike of this vintage ive owned some older bikes trail mainly with similar noises and had no problems. mal
A bit off o.p but trev I have a rattle that goes away when the clutch is pulled in what was the problem you were thinking it could be? The rattle seems to go quiet when the engine warms up a little bit.
ok so needs new clutch? i read somewhere amongst the many links on google that the plates could be loose and grating along the housing ? but i cant see any metal flakes in the oil. i dont know exactly as im a baker not a mechanic * wish i was at times like this* i just find it weird that the sound minimizes when the bike is warmed up.
Clutch chatter with the clutch out etc can be pretty normal with bikes......google it I would be even less concerned if it disappears when warmed up.......everything Ive read about the Fizzers is that they are very "noisy" at low revs......its built to rev "high" Are u using the right oil and has it been changed recently? If the clutch is engaging normally and gears are changing ok Id be baking bread and riding......
oil level is fine. i dont know exactly what oil is in it as it hasnt been changed by me. i have only had it for 1000km and it was replaced before i got it. the oil doesnt look fouled. could you recommend a good oil for the old bike? its a 3ln1.
10W 40 seems to be wat the experts on here recommend........just make sure its motorcycle oil as car oils have "friction modifiers" in them which will make the clutch slip. This is what Ill be using when I get to do it.... http://www.linkint.com.au/motul_5100_10w40_4t.html Its not cheap and Im open to the more experienced here if theres a better choice....
