Howdy all, Sorry guys, I know this is in the forum already somewhere but i couldn't make heads nor tails from the replies. I have had my bike looked at by someone. Im in need of a Chain and sprocket set. (I have an 88 FZR-250 2kr) Ive been looking on ebay and found mostly (D.I.D. brand) 89 2kr chain and sprocket kits...Will this fit on my 88 FZR250? I also found the 520 kit for 88-89 FZR 250, but is it really worth it (although its cheaper)? ....im assuming its mostly the chain which is just a bit more of a heavy duty and less likely to stretch? Are there any other mods/tuning i need to do to have this on my bike? ..but also stumbled on bits and pieces of ppl saying that the 520 sprocket has a short lifespan, or is this only for more torquier bikes? Cheers, kris <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s -->
I'm not sure where you are located but Glenn from flying squirrel in Toronto, Canada got me my chain and sprockets. I just used all stock specs. Got myself a gold chain as well. Give him a google but I think his website is fsmotorcycle.com. Best to give him a call and tell him Darryl sent ya.
mate a 520 chain is just a bit narrower and lighter than the stocker, its not 'heavy-duty' or anything like that. Good for race or track bikes <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s -->
? The stock chain on a 250 is a 428. There is no need for a 520, and the extra rotating mass will do bad things to your acceleration.
Find out what the stock sprocket sizes (number of teeth ) are and the stock chain pitch which as Don said is 428 and number of links in the chain. Unless u know the ins and outs of gearing (ie changing sprocket sizes ) stick to what came on the bike. Do some research on bike gearing, chain pitch, types of chain (o ring,x ring etc etc ) to get a better understanding of whats involved. As mentioned changing the stock configuration can increase acceleration but lessen top speed or vice versa. You can also run into problems such as too small a front sprocket and the chain will chew into the swingarm chain guard. It will probably be a cheap chain that will make a "kit" cheaper. I bought my sprockets from these guys but just picked up a basic o ring chain from the local Yammy dealer as the weight of a chain is a freight cost killer. https://www.slipstreamperformance.c...fo.php?cPath=1234_1235_1239&products_id=35569 https://www.slipstreamperformance.c...nfo.php?cPath=589_1153_1197&products_id=29070 https://www.slipstreamperformance.com.au/store/product_info.php?products_id=28792 Also be prepared to remove a few links to make the chain the correct fitment length and to allow for future adjustment.
Sweet thanx everyone for the info. Also big thanx to GRey Import for the links. ur a Champion. <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s --> soo...yeah im gunna go stock sprocket. so chains are much of a muchness then im assuming?
It depends on how hard you run and how carefully you maintain the chain, including cleaning, lubing, and adjusting. A cheap piece o' crap will stretch out in no time flat no matter what you do, while a high-end chain will last for years with only moderate attention.
Well i got a $30 chain on order, so ill hafta invest in a hd gold chain then. i just need to get this done for rwc. yeah i give it a bit of a hard time, but its not running 100% gotta clean & rejet carbs n get valves clearances checked. For some reason the traffic at 80km passes me quite easily.
