Carb issue - fuel leak

    OK team try this one.
    Have rebuilt the carbs on my 1989/90 3LN without issue but I cannot stop fuel pouring out the T piece between carbs 2 & 3
    New rubber seals and have even tried a second T piece but not luck.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Did they leak before you fitted the new seals?
    The fuel seals are fragile and quite a tight fit; as such they can tear when being fitted.
    Or there could be a crack in the carb body where the seal fits.

    The T piece broke during the dismantling so I've tried both a good used and custom made stainless steel replacement along with new seals.
    To me it looks like the T piece has some lateral play with the carb bodies but the through bolt is tight and nothing seems out of place.
    It's almost as if there's something missing!

    I am sure you just answered your own question right there.
    I don't think you could get away with any significant lateral freeplay or the seals will surely leak.
    We need another 250 owner here to check how much free play that T piece has.
    My 400 carbs are in a million pieces right now as I am waiting to get the moulds and viton seals finished for the throttle shafts.

    I will have a look at my 250 when I pick it up tomorrow and see what sort of free-play is in that T-piece ( I would expect zero ??)

    Blair - all good news so far with the kit and the dyno etc - Brett (owner of MotoGarage) ran it today, all the o-rings fitted fine and after a balance - he pulled 37hp at the back wheel. But he has some final checking to do with the tank cover fitted - I removed it along with the fairing to help, but there is too much air being sucked into the motor without the tank cover fitted - so he wants to complete the tuning with the cover on.

    I should have results and dyno charts tomorrow with a bit of luck - will kick off a new thread with the info <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

    It's been a few years since I had my carbs apart, but my vague recollection is that that thing is in there tight - no lateral movement at all.

    Well the bike is back on the road and running well...........we as good as British E10 fuel will allow.
    The fuel leak is now fixed but it took a trip to a dealer who's happy to handle older bikes to sort it.
    Almost beyond belief but true there are two holes one above the other on the Mikuni carb (2&3) exactly the same diameter <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt=":oops:" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->
    To make matters worse there's only about 2mm difference in the combined depth of these mouldings/drillings.

    So boys and girls can you work out which ones Old Bike Git here used? Yes of course the wrong ones <!-- s:angry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/th_Angry.gif" alt=":angry:" title="angry" /><!-- s:angry: -->
    Because there's so little space it's almost impossible to see the two holes unless you take the carbs off the rail.
    Of course then it's blindingly obvious <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt=":oops:" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: --> <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt=":oops:" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: --> <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt=":oops:" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->
    I cannot recall another occasion when such a thing has been possible on a Japanese bike; they normally make everything idiot proof.
    Anyway we're back and running now so fingers crossed all's well etc.

    Just one appeal to anyone who might be able to help please. I am documenting the FRZ250 for UK magazine Classis Motorcycle Mechanics
    but stupidly didn't get a picture of the double hole problem when the carbs were on the bench.
    Does anyone have a set that are stripped down? If so I could really use a hi-res image of these god-forsaken holes of misery.
    Can anyone help please?

    Glad to hear that you got it sorted.
    The bad news is that your new seals will not have a very long life when you run E10.
    Nitrile, what your standard seals are made from, was never intended for that.
