The clutch lock-out switch on most bikes is designed to work just like you have described - i.e. you have to pull the clutch lever in, before the bike will start.......it is meant to work like that.

Check your neutral switch; the safety relay assembly thinks the bike is in gear, so it won't allow the starter to work unless the clutch is pulled in.

Also sounds like the sidestand switch has gotten sticky - not uncommon and also the reason that back when these switches were first introduced, we all used to remove the switches and just plug the wiring harness ends together......you can do the same thing to the clutch lock-out switch. This will by-pass both circuits. You just have to remember to start the bike in neutral......

as Don says - it should be located right under the clutch lever pivot. There should be some wiring coming out of the switch - at least 2 wires, could be encased in 1 plastic cover ? If you follow these back to the plug on the wiring harness - generally under the tank area somewhere - this is where you unplug this lead and fit a small jumper lead into the main harness.
