Hey guy, names Rhys and I just got myself an FZR250 3ln3!
From Melbourne, Australia.
Here's a picture of what she looks like:
When I got it, I was told it was garaged for 10 years and just been taken back out cleaned right out and put back onto the road for selling. Sounded good so I bought it.
First problem I was running into was making approx. 50kms before having to switch to reserve. Problem: only had to fill up with about 4lts of petrol.
Took it to my very good friend mechanic (used to be a Ducati test rider; loves his machines and trustworthy), he figured it needed a carboy rebuild, so in it went for the rebuild, he also took the engine apart and supposedly was pulling out handfuls of gunk from in there, immediately after I found a lot more power; especially on take off. started to make 100kms before switching to reserve (still wasn't happy about this). So to day it makes about 70kms to reserve but only fill 5lts of petrol. My friend believes the fuel line/engine is full of sh*t and needs an amazing clean out. So I will be taking it in somewhere (he's organising it) to be blasted clean.
QUESTION 1: Does anyone know what could be causing this problem, of seemingly not drawing fuel once it gets to a certain level?
So now I just want to get this engine sorted so its running mechanically sound, THEN want to make it look all beautiful again, a bit of surface rust on the forks and stuff, nothing major. I plan on spraying the frame black as well as the wheels and forks. respraying a lot of the parts as they've lost their beauty over the years.
QUESTION 2: Can anyone tell me if Brake and clutch levers that are meant for an R6 will fit on my FZR? As there are almost no good looking parts going around for an FZR and if there are they cost way too much to justify.

So all in all I'm pretty happy with my purchase, love the retro bikes but didn't want to be common and get a CBR250RR so now I have a gorgeous rare-ish import!
Anyway thanks and I look forward to any responses!

Hi, Rhys. Welcome to the addiction!

Before you get into any engine work, pull the whole fuel system, from tank to carbs, and give everything a good cleaning. I'll bet your tank has a bunch of crud on the bottom, and it has fouled the intake screen and the fuel filter.

The R6 levers will not bolt to the FZR perches, but the R6 perches will bolt to the FZR bars. Note that this involves a master cyl swap (a good upgrade anyway), plus the possible need to modify the clutch cable. I know the 400s and 600s need a short spacer to allow adjustment of the cable, I don't know if that holds true with the 250.

Yeah the whole intake, and fuel lines were cleaned right through, fuel tank was cleaned once again (3rd time since getting it). Fuel filter was filthy when I got it so thats been replaced but it just occasionally seems to block up again but I'm guessing it gets pushed through the system cause other times it get more kms to the tank!
Anyway whatever happens I'll be posting updates here and there when things happen!
okay I'll have to look further into that lever conversion then, thanks for the info!

It sounds like the fuel is not getting to the carbs after 5 litres is used. The tank holds 14 litres and reserve is at 3.8 litres remaining.

Have a look at the fuel pump or fuel delivery in general. Once it gets to a level where it does not run properly check that you have a good volume of fuel coming out of the supply hose to the carbs after you disconnect it from them. Turn the ignition on, the pump should run for a few seconds. Pump it into clear hose and catch in a bottle. For your own safety make sure there are no naked flames about.

So I'm leaving the engine/fuel line work until my friend can have another look at it. This tank of fuel I got to 130kms before hitting reserve, its just so unpredictable and inconsistent!
I've decided on going for something like these for the levers (when i get some money together, just paying off a holiday at the moment haha):

They are universal and will fit on the FZR bars so that's fine, they look pretty good and are adjustable. Leaning towards the more expensive ones as I suppose you usually get what you pay for right?
Just realised in the first photo thats how it looked when i first got it; I got custom FZR and Yamaha stickers made up for it so I'll get a photo next time I can
Thats all for now

The levers would look a bit more tidy than the 30year old originals for sure.

Look forward to seeing the updated pics...

So after spending close to $600 on the carby rebuild, its started getting sluggish again and feeling like its running on 3 cylinders again.
Such a bum. Really didn't want to throw any more money into my first bike but hopefully getting it looked at in the not too distant future. With summer coming I obviously want something to ride so I will probably have to get it going well again.
Hopefully I'll have something good to update with soon!
In other news I go for my full license tomorrow, so that's exciting.

Hopefully it would just be bit of rubbish in one of the carby float valves, something that is easily fixed..

Good luck on the full licence test..
