    G'day boys,
    Help needed!
I've had the problem on and off for a while.
Bought a new battery and most nights keep it on the trickle charger.
Also have a new mosfet rectifier to fit [soon] because I think the charging system is a bit weak and theres no 'off' switch for the lights so if you leave them on or if the battery is a bit low...Yr fkd.

However...Just went to get fuel, filled her up and then got the dreaded click clack from the starter then after a few tries...Nothing.
Walked the battery home, put it on charge, went back and still nothing.
Took the headlights out [which were warm btw] and still nada.
I knocked the starter doohicky [up near the battery around] with a screwdriver...Nada.
A bloke in a van also tried jumper leads [which have always worked in the past] and nothing...Altho the terminals were very hot.

I'm guessing something after the battery and before the engine so starter motor or similar.

    Any guesses?

    Cheers
    SL

Sounds like what happened to my starter on the Ninja 250 I had. Press button, solenoid clicks, starter does nothing.

Replaced the battery first up, no change. Then checked the solenoid with a multimeter which was fine. It did end up being the starter motor. All good once it was replaced, but I had to roll start the bike for about 2 weeks.

What happens with starters is that the brushes wear out and don't make contact, or the bendix (one way clutch) gives out. They can be serviced/repaired, which would be a better option than binning it.

You can try tapping the starter with a mallet and see if it will go again.

Yup...Sounds the same. For some reason this bike just wont bump start!
Just slides the back wheel or makes weird noise when I try. Odd.

Try it in 2nd not first

I've roll started mine when it wouldn't go due to the cold, it was either that or catch the train to work and be late

Yeh second gear for the win, making sure you have all the kill switch and key turned to on...lol. Try chucking the positive of the jump lead on the terminal at the starter motor too mate, if it spins over then its not your starter.

    https://www.google.com.au/search?q=...iw=1525&bih=705&dpr=0.9#imgrc=n4fq6DIgnk3YAM:

Do you see in the centre of the motor there is a black plug on top of a round horizontal cylinder...thats your starter motor. Pull that plug up, turn the ignition to on, and connect a jumper lead to the positive on the battery to the terminal underneath that plug. Might spark a little bit so dont be too stressed if it does. It should wind over and hopefully start. If not, tap on that cylinder with a hammer, the gear on the end of the starter may be stuck.

If it does start...Is the problem then the solenoid or the starter motor [stuck or fkd]?

Pretty easy to remove if it comes to it .... this came out of a partly disassembled engine but Id guess it would be as easy in situ.

Sounds as though something is seized. Stop trying to start it until you find out what that is or you may cause serious damage.
First check is to remove the spark plugs and see if you can rotate the engine in neutral.

It has never liked being bump started. I'm 99% sure that it's electrical. The solenoid goes click. Occasionally theres a very slow starter motor noise and the lights go dim.
I've just been to Coffs and back on it [two up] to Sydney. She runs sweet apart from this glitch...Which has happened twice after filling up with fuel. Odd.

That would suggest that it's shorting somewhere???? could also be something blocking movement??? I would follow @maelstrom advise and check if engine turns over??? :headbang:

First check and clean with file/sandpaper to bright metal ALL terminals from battery to starter, also earth from engine case to battery.
Check starter with jumper cable from battery + to starter terminal.
I suspect that your starter is worn out and needs rebuilding/repair/replacing, causing no go when engine is hot after a run to servo, so check all those connections first.
    Hope this helps.

Don't throw the starter, they can be repaired easily.
All my starter issues have just been dirty units.
Pull it apart carefully & wash everything in petrol or kero or turps & scratch out the grooves on the end of the armature where the brushes run.
You mightn't get that far anyway, have a look & see whats left of the brushes. They are replaceable & anything that fits will do the job, any electrical tool repair shop will have plenty of different types to try & they're cheap.
