So ive decided to remove the engine cover and what do you know....two of the bolts snap and the other two break the camshaft cap. Think to myself no problem i just get another camshaft cap. Start taking that off and three bolts snap on me. Now im stuck with a no good cam cap which i cant take off. Anyone had something similar happen? Any advice?
Sounds like someone before u has used 3 tubes of thread lock on them and/or tightened them way too much .... Can u post up some photos of the damage ?
Heres a run down on using easy outs When u attempt to remove any broken or any other bolts I would be getting some heat on them to try and loosen things up and break the seal.
For what it is worth, I have found these screw extractors to be the best because they do not expand the screw into the thread as you try to remove it. http://www.dowson.co.za/products/ridgid-products/ridgid-screw-extractors Unfortunately it is often the case that much of repairing motorcycles is undoing someone else's work. Often fasteners shear off because they were cross threaded the last time they were put in. Give the fastener head a tap with a small hammer before trying to loosen it. Then use the correct length tool for each size fastener (spanners are made the length they are for just that reason). If the tool is too long it will transmit too much torque and make it difficult to feel whether the screw is loosening or shearing. The longer the screw the greater the risk of shear. If you feel that it is not going to loosen then you should consider removing the head of the fastener so that a good length of the shank remains for you to work with. cheers Blair
there is a ZXR250 engine on ebay for $79 (low compression) , cant go wrong for spares and that will get you a new cam guide... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281134835060?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Alex, when trying to undo a stuck bolt always push the spanner towards the thick part of the casting, NOT away from as this will often break the piece off the casting.
Picked up the spare engine today. Gonna get an easy out and some left handed drill bits tomorrow and hopefully all goes well.
managed to get the cam cap out just by using easy grips. those things are magic. cams are now out of line. contacting a fellow member who has been in the same situation and doing some research on how to line it all up. cheers for all your help guys
