I just picked up a 1988 Yamaha FZR 4cyl 250. Its a fun ride and I'm buying some accessories but there's a few small issues .. the fuel pump clicks when switched on and it blows a little blue smoke on start up but disappears shortly after ... neither of these seem to affect its performance as its a rocket .. just wondering how to get rid of them though ... any ideas?

    Welcome dude.

Blue smoke would mean it is burning oil... could be a few things, none of which I would consider simple fixes. It's an old bike I'd just be topping up the oil and watching the level and running with it.

When I turn mine on the fuel pump sometimes clicks a little I imagine that's to fill the carb bowls before starting.

    :welcome:

Fuel pump clicks/ticks/hums as it is priming before startup ..... then it will stop (as long as the fuel is getting to it)

What oil is in it ? .... how long since an oil change? .... does it have the correct amount in there?

Bought the bike 2 days ago so need to check / top up oil etc and maybe do a change. Just thought these might have been common problems for the fizzer maybe.... I wont worry about the pump clicking as long as it switches off when carb bowls are full. Goes really well so I guess .. 'if it ain't broke ... '

Oil change is a good idea, plus it helps you get to know your bike

Yep .. getting used to it a bit more each day. Its a far cry from my other bike .. an '83 Suzuki GR650 twin (reds @ 8,500) .. different animal altogether. Cheers

Welcome. Fuel pump clicking is normal, it cycles with the ignition. Just turn the fuel tap on before you start the bike and it should quiet down a bit with some fuel going through it.

Blue haze is oil burning, most likely the rings and/or valve stem seals need replacing. Not a hard job if you have the tools available.

You're funny Linkin. Replacing the rings is "not a hard job". Sure, pulling half the engine apart isn't hard at all :lolsign:

I would agree it's less hard once you've done it once or twice perhaps! :thumb_ups:

It's easy coz the engine is small and light, compared to bigger bikes, and there's not a lot of **** hanging off the head.

The barrels also come off as opposed to being part of the top crankcase half.

Re the smoking; you could try a bit of diesel in your fuel ( about 50:1 ratio, a cupful in a tank) and a good long ride (100Km+). You may need to do this a couple of times to see any result. The diesel will clean any carbon off of the rings and seals and allow them to seal better. You can also use a commercial type engine cleaner, but diesel is cheaper.

Its an FZR250 ..... if its not rattling and smoking it means the ignition is off ..... go out and ride the thing to the max
