    Hey all.

I've become quite hooked on the idea of buying an FZR for a project, this one recently came on Gumtree for $725. This one does run and the EXUP works but I'm just wondering if it's worth buying it, I don't really know that much about them.

    Looks like a 3LN1.

Basic roadworthy stuff you are looking at a new fairing screen, new tyres, brake pads & fluid, chain & sprockets, blinkers, horn, all lights and accessories basically.

Carbs can be an issue. Test ride it if you can. Check for any bogging down, flooding, or stalling when letting the clutch out. If you get any of that be prepared to drop a couple hundred on the Keyster carby kits plus LiteTek gasket set (which I recommend you do, the keyster gaskets are passable). Check for cam chain noise. Basically a lot of rattle until the revs start getting high.

Check the fuel tank for rust as well.

Onto the more advanced stuff you will likely need to do... valve clearance check & adjustment, maybe a cam chain. You will definitely want to put on a new fuel filter.

If you want a fizzer that badly, go for it, but be prepared to invest more time and money into it. More than you initially paid for it...

Im sure Im going to surprise a few members on here, by saying go for it (im a Honda guy)

The FZR is an awesome bike, there are plenty of owners on here to help if you get stuck with it. there are a few things that wear out such as Carb needles and carb seals, but we know where to source them so its all good. My 2c are to spend the time on the important things such as setting your valve clearances and sort your carbs.

good luck, I hope you get it.. if it was me, Id offer $500 cash

This is 100% Correct. I paid 750 for mine, running, but did all of the above mentioned.

Including the original Purchase price, on the road, cost me $2700 which included a new fairing ($500 ebay cheapy).

But dont let that turn you off.

You said you after a project bike, so this could be it. IMHO its the best 2700 Ive ever spent. I love my FZR, and I think they not only look better than the CBR's, but sound better too.

However, replacement parts arent the easiest to come by. Especially when put beside the CBR.

I think go for it. At Kiffsta's price.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I went to look at the bike and so many parts are missing. Not really worth it, I wouldn't sell it for anymore than $300 personally.

I'll just have to wait for a better one.

Fizzers are ok, get used to tinkering though :)

Few around I'm sure you'll find a half decent one eventually.

I just bought a 1988 model (2KR). It's far and away the most fun bike I've owned. The last one was a 97' Blackbird 1100cc which was great but the FZR kicks ass.
You have to keep your focus and stay busy on it because it wants to race you. Keeping the revs up and staying in or around the 10,000+ rpm mark for gear changes gives great response as it was designed to be stretched out through the power band.
It sounds great and handles well and has as much speed as any new 250 out there. The FZR inline 4 cyl's were built for riders. If you get one .. hang onto it.
