I know I'm being this post back from the dead, but I'm about to be doing this conversion, is there any way to still use the mc22 rim? It's got brand new discs, s21 tyres and been freshly painted, so I don't really want to use the zxr rim, and also, do you have any other tips or things to be aware of while doing this conversion? Only problem I ran into was, I needed to make very thin spacers for the bearings to fit the head stem .. but I'm sure if you have the money you could order the right size bearings... I did mine on a budget, I had all the parts and my step father had the steel lathe I used to make the parts I needed.. As for the wheel... Anything is doable with the right equipment, just be prepared for it to take some extra time and measuring... you have to remember there is not much written about the conversion so you will be playing by trial and error, that is what I did... One big thing you will have to do is drop the forks through the triple clamps because the length difference in the forks... Also if your making things, find out a way to delete the H frame that holds the mirrors up... my forks clear the H frame by millimeters..
Even if I swap/press our the bearing race from the mc22 and put them on the zxr triples will I need to make spacers? If so would you be able to help me with sizes? And for the H frame, I'm thinking of welding one together once the forks are in so I know where it needs to be, where you able to just put the zx axle into the 22 rim? Or where the bearings changed?
Hey basil, it's not just bearings, the offset will be different for brake disks and the calipers won't line up, plus the axle is a different thickness. What about Using some forks off an rvf400
This is not a thread about fitting ZXR forks to an MC22. It is about fitting any USD forks to anything. Unless it is a virtual match, fitting triple clamps is best done by making a new stem. With radial calipers the disc diameter is not a big issue and with axial it is. As Kiffsta mentione you also have to deal with disc offset, easier on the axial and more difficult on the radial. Later model USD forks use large diameter axles and may require the wheel to be machined and/or custom axles/spacers/sleeves made. Without accurate information it is difficult to know if you can fit a different front end to your bike and such information is difficult to find. This is why I made the table of fork data.
any chance a mod can move the questions about the ZXR/MC22 conversion to a thread about that conversion only? would make sense as I suspect there will be a lot more questions about the conversion, I will post some pictures of my bike in said thread to give people the look and idea of what to expect.
