Bandits are not downdraft (BST rather than BDST) so they avoid the complexity of the jet housing seals and do not have gravity pushing the needles into the emulsion tubes. Most of the wear of these two parts seems to be occurring when the engine is at idle. You can see this by all the pics that owners have posted. Obviously, this is the point at which there is minimum clearance between the needle and the emulsion tube, but that is only half the story; the other half is that when the idle mixture and/or synch is incorrect the slides, carbs and the engine will vibrate which accelerates wear on those two critical parts. The more they wear the more difficult it becomes to get a smooth idle and so the cycle becomes self perpetuating. If we could get a video of Grasshopper's slides at idle and compare that to another FZR that has a lumpy idle it would illustrate this clearly. It is so important that idle mixture is set correctly but unfortunately most owners rely on 'n turns out' which is, at best, just a starting point.
    cheers
    Blair

Carbs are still half done .... I tend to pick up a spanner to do 1 little thing and end up just ripping in and pulling stuff apart :D

Engine is ok in some parts ... not so good elsewhere

I have it real bad. I see a piece of the frame and I think "God, that looks hideous" and I reach for the hacksaw.

Jesus Blair, that's a tad radical my friend. With me it's more like..... "That could do with a clean or a coat of paint"

Pulled all the engine to frame bolts (3) but couldnt get it to drop out .... moreso lifting the frame off the motor ..... am I missing something or is it just 'stuck' ?

I gave up cause it was too dark anyway.
