I was going to post this up later, but thought I would just go ahead & crack on with it. Otherwise, a build thread just gets put off, put off, & put off, until you think "Stuff it, I cant be bothered" & never eventuates. So here it is. But what's a build thread without a story?

    Lets re-wind to 2007.

I had been wanting a bike for a few years, and had gotten my bike learners as part of my car learners so there wouldnt be a licencing issue. A family friend had ridden (& still has under restoration, an 88 FZR 1000). His son decided to keep with familiarity (same as I have) & bought a FZR 250 2KR. After a few years on, he sold it to his sister, & sat unridden for a few years until I mentioned that I was looking to buy a bike, & after the impression the FZR's had made on me, that I was after an FZR 250. After finding out what his daughter was doing with the bike, he rang me & told me I could buy it & a deal was made. Getting it to my place, it wasnt running, but apparently wouldnt take much to.

Unfortunately, funds dried up for a few years due to bad decisions, & finally when I was able to get some money together, I sent it down to a local bike place to investigate what was needed & how long it would take. I paid for the parts straight up, (with labour to be paid on completing of works) including new air filter, new oil filter, (All those "Servicing costs") new battery, new rear tyre, and other bits & pieces. It needed the carbies pulled apart & serviced, then re-assembled with the Fairing to be re-painted & on the road. That's as far as it got. He went bankrupt.

Long Story short, after almost 2 years I got the bike back. And it isnt pretty. I sent it out in alot better condition than what came back. I am yet to fully survey what is missing from it. And after all I paid, I got a new rear tyre. Thats it. Looking at the bike & discussing with our family friend, he suggested moving onto another bike. Too much money would be spent putting it on the road & would cost just as much, if not more than another in better shape anyway. Then look at the time spent. How much is that time worth? So I was convinced & almost another year passed, as at the time, I was flying the coup, & needed to get the funds together for living in the big bad world with my own little family.

Fast forward to around a month ago when an overload of work suddenly had me with a chunk of money left over. Um..... What to do? Spend it on the car? (Which is ANOTHER build in itself) or by a Fizzer (Which I have always kept tabs on through ebay, bikesales & gumtree)

I found a bike in my price range, that was near complete (with a bit of work needed) & in my state. It was also delivered to me, due to the owner needing to attend a race meeting in Warrick that weekend. Looking at the bike, it looked OK. But needed some work. But most of all, it was running. A deal was struck & an hour later parked up next to his FZR 1000 in the shed. 1990 "Tech 21" Special Edition. Only seen about 3 or 4 of these. A rare bike.

Enough talk, time for some pics. Day of pickup:

Looking back, I could have spent a little more money & got a road-worthy bike. But when opportunity knocks.....

I also like the look of the single headlight 3LN models & the Colour scheme of this bike,

So Monday last week, I had a free day & headed around to my mates place to look at what could be done, do some work & compile a list of what is needed.

After some striping down, a cleaning of the air filter, as well as some new air cleaner box bolts (it only had two, so a quick trip was made to the local bolt shop to find a near as possible replacement) a charge of the battery, she fired on the second push of the button. I was certainly happy with that.

Then I compiled a list, and a quick call to the local Yammy shop for some accompanying prices:

    -Front & Rear Sprockets ($13 - $8)
    -Chain (109)
    -2 Front indicators,
    -Oil & Filter (Filter 25 - Oil 69 [for 4 litres?? ouch!])
    -New Footpeg rubbers
    -Sparkplugs ($6 each)
    -Coolant (After a flush)
-Swing arm bearings (Might as well do them) ($30 Each)
-Fix Brake light issue (Brake light staying on)

    Major
-Repair or New Fairing, (Pics show the story)
-New windscreen (Will most probably come with fairing)
-Bolt set for fairing (If repairing)

Obviously, I brought the faring home with me to find out the cost to repair it. Top cowling is broken (Pics tell the story) A chunk is missing from the RHS fairing (wasnt supplied) and a the lower part of the cowling chunk was found in the induction tube. So that will make it easier to repair. The other problems are some of the locating tabs are missing for the FAI covers to screw into. The rear plate above the seat, the locating tabs from that & the side are broken off. And the LHS does have some cracking.

    Pics:

    RHS Fairing

Been repaired a few times too:

You can also see the locating bracket/tabs are nowhere to be seen:

    Top cowling:

See the chunk taken out on the bottom of this cowling. Also part of the windscreen mounting wing is gone. I have the part that is held onto by the mirror, other than that.......

    LHS Fairing

See the cracks a little above the engine cover hole. Has has some stress over the years.

Thats all the pics for now.

Now its a case of rebuilding & repairing.

Fairing is the biggest issue. I dont know what way to go here. Funds are a little tight, but time is also a factor. My mate cant keep the bike for too long. He needs the space back, & I have none.

Fairing wise, it may be cheaper to buy a new one off of ebay (there are a number of choices) for around 500, Australian Fairing solutions also offer the same colorscheme as those shown on ebay from China (A bit of head-scratching there) for 560 to my door. Fixing and repainting by the looks is going to cost more. Though AFS say they can do custom jobs as well.

So this build is Time vs Money vs Practicality.

If anyone has any suggestions, they are welcomed.

Thats all for now. Will update as it progresses.......

    Cheers.

    Forgot to mention....

    Needs new rear tyre.

To be donated for my old 2KR..... Not a complete loss.....

As for mods, only one I think.

A USB charger for the phone.

And maybe some comfy new grips & bar ends

That headlight cowling is broken exactly like mine ...... mine is duct taped :prankster: until I can afford proper repairs ...... my side fairings are a mess also ..... the bike passed roadworthy without sides on and also no rear cowlings either as they need work also (broken tabs)
I intend to ride it that way untill I can afford decent repairs...... as u can see by my thread , its was on the bottom of the list!

    http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/my-fizzer.872/

I bought a screen off an ebayer in Hong Kong and I must say it fitted perfectly and looks to be of pretty good quality .. cheap also.

Shop around for specific Yamaha parts .... look on ebay.com (not just .au) as alot of parts are used over alot of different Yam machinery....... use the part number not the bike model.
I did what u have done ..... get prices from the dealer then look and compare elsewhere.

Any bearings check with your local bearing shop ...... my wheels bearings and seals were cheap as chips from them.

I did read through your thread. It's nice being able to build from scratch. Some interesting ideas there. May need to pay a licencing fee. :)

My mates brother is doing the road worthy & was with us as we took the bike apart.

He made it abundantly clear it must have the "Factory Fairing or Replacement" to pass roadworthy. Which is fair enough. So fairing, I have no choice on.

I will look at other options for parts to keep the cost down. When I have more time I will check out the links you posted in my hello thread.

As for bearings, I may just stick to OEM on that one, just in case there is a minute difference to what I need & what the bearing shop gives me.

    Cheers.

Yea maybe I had the advantage of an easy going country town bike shop ...... the bike was also not running properly which required it to be transported in their van to get it inspected .... so the xtra cost of that and the money I spent at the parts counter probably greased their hands a little ....:D

Ive no idea of the rules up there but seems a little odd with the fairings/cowlings ..... as there are such things as naked bikes! ...... not like having a mudguard missing from a car so to speak.

    cheers

    Queenslander!

    Swingarm needle roller bearings
heres a quick search using the Yam part number....

    http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/yamaha/YP-93320-32403-00.html
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-RD35...earing-NOS-REAR-ARM-93320-32403-/370867551072

Found this while searching ..... the bearing should carry a number ....
    http://www.ypmrc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2361
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TA2428Z-...n-End-Type-24x31x28mm-Motorbike-/160681241242

So your dealer price sounds pretty good ..... dont forget new seals as well .
I didnt replace the bearings in mine but its easy to bugger the seals when removing and the ones in the running bike were hard as.... so used the spares from the parts bike as they were "ok".

Partzilla are pretty handy for parts .... better before the Oz dollar dipped.
250s arnt very common in the USA but the 400 is very similar and as mentioned before alot of parts are common across alot of other bike models and atvs, jetskis etc etc
The 250s are pretty common in the UK so parts there are readily sold.
These guys have some 'maintenance' orientated stuff for the FZR250....

    http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?forums/pyramid-parts.114/

The FZR250 is a grey import around the world so there is no manual in English ..... the 400 manual is in English
Heres a link (on my Google Drive) for that manual and parts catalogues ....

However with naked bikes, like Buells, etc, they are like that from factory. So, factory fairing, no problem.

Street fighters are different. They have the fairing removed after RWC. Technically they are illegal.

Same as adding a supercharger to your car. There is a formula to calculate what size engine capacity your allowed to run in your car. For my Fairlane it's something like 289Ci where as from factory my engine is a 302ci.

As ludicrous as its sounds, and we may know people that own a vehicle contradictory to the laws but never had a problem with it, it's still the law.

Man you are a wealth of knowledge. I think I have a 400 manual. 94 model. Might be a 600. Have to check. But I did use it to see how the manual cleaned the Air filter (In case petrol corroded it) & to confirm the number of bolts to re-assemble the air box.

Thanks for links. I will be checking them out later. But now it's time for sleep. Gotta work tonight.

    Cheers.

PS. Risky, I am located in SE QLD.

ebay.com has a clear 2kr screen with free delivery from hong kong for 17.99 us.

also had smoked screens at various prices but be aware low buying price is made up for by freight cost.

Yes I'm well aware of the freight costs when buying from HK.

There is a smoked one on eBay up here in QLD. I might grab it as a spare.

    Ok, Small update.

Fairing has been ordered. I decided to break from originality (though I will be keeping the original fairing) with this one:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271276847655?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

I have decided to go this route as this is the quickest & easiest option. Its a good looking kit, and after too much time trying to replicate the decals with my mate (who is a printer & graphic artist by trade), we decided against it. All need to do is find another 3LN tank & paint it the same colour. I will look at this at a later date.

I have also received swing arm bearings and seals & stuff. As well as new plugs, which are in. Now I need to line up sprockets and a chain & I can do the swing arm all in one hit. (I dont do things twice) I got a rude suprise when my local yammy dealer phoned me to confirm the price of genuine sprockets. 150 for both. So I will be using slipstream to get them in. Beats it at almost a 1/3 of the price.

    https://www.slipstreamperformance.com.au/store/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=fzr250

Which I have to ask, grey which ones am I after? The normal or the "520" conversion ones?

The fairing is due to arrive sometime after the 1st of November. So I want to have the bike ready to ride by around the 15th.

I will update accordingly with pics as I progress.

There is still plenty to do. including finding out why the rear brake is causing the brake lights to stay on, as well as alot of cleaning to do. Along with the swing arm stuff.

Stick with the stock setup .... u can + or - a tooth or two on the sprockets but read up on gearing first to see what its going to do to your top speed / acceleration .

Just check the little spring loaded brake switch near the brake pedal is adjusted correctly or is not junked up with road grunge

Thanks for that grey. I was out by a tooth on the rear when I counted. Your the 3rd to confirm that it is 56 not 55. But I thought I may have missed a tooth during the count.

    I was right.

Oh I forgot to mention that I am looking at a newer set of indicators. Just update the look. Anyone have any suggestions on style & brand?

Well looking at it, I will be going the Std 17 on the front, & a 55 on the rear. It will spend most of the time on the highway doing 100/110 so a approx 200 drop in revs wont hurt & be a little nicer to ride I think.

I see there is a chain & sprocket package, but I see you you use a genuine chain, Grey. Any reason for that? And have you bought the sprockets from them? If so what gearing did you use?

    This is the package:

    https://www.slipstreamperformance.com.au/store/product_info.php?products_id=35569

Dealer wants 109 for the chain.

May also pickup a K&N oil filter while I am ordering the sprockets....

I cant give any feedback about the setup as riding around the block 3 times doesnt count  ..... my riding will be blatting about the countryside for pleasure and not much 100k highway stuff.

The chain was just a basic o-ring from the dealer ..... I just went that way thinking shipping on a chain would be crazy.
I had to cut a few links off as finding the exact length is near impossible I discovered.

It was $109 and was an RK Racing Chain O-ring 428SO 136 link Made in Japan (which has got to be a good thing)

Forgot to mention that I ordered the Chain & Sprocket Deal on Friday morning with a K&N oil filter Should be here Monday or Tuesday. I got the confirmation of Dispatch & Tax invoice Friday Morning, so it should be here pretty quick.

    Yahoo. Coming together.

Also found another Fizzer with the fairing kit I ordered on Gumtree:
