Your CTP varies? I could understand other insurance varying, but thought CTP was regulated to a set rate.

Yeah, but there are only 6 or so companies in NSW that do CTP insurance... it doesn't matter who you go with... for a 250cc generally speaking: if you live in the city it's $400-$440, if you live in the country it's $250, and as per grey's post if you're an old fart you get cheaper still
CTP is strange to me. Our auto insurance covers that here. Very strange that it's a seperate policy there. I feel your pain on the expense though. Since the US is terrible about investing in public transit infrastructure, and the West Coast doubly so, Seattle is currently experiencing similar sticker shock on our vehicle regos this year. We voted to pay for a light-rail system, and everyone missed that it was going to triple the amount of excise tax we paid yearly on our vehicles. Insurance stays the same, the cost to register stays the same, the county fees stayed the same.... but the portion of the price assigned to vehicle value went from .30 percent, to 1.1 percent. When you said CTP in the city screwed you, i had to google and make sure it wasn't a similar thing to us! My vehicle renewal went from about 65 dollars to 275 this year. A friend of mine (who drives a BMW I8, so he can damned well afford it) had his renewal come in, 1,550 bucks! Living in the city costs money, i guess. On topic, the ZXR is running great without an airbox and I haven't had time to sort it. About the only thing I did bike related this week was get estimates on the damage from that Pothole To The Center Of The Earth i hit with the Ducati last week. I submitted the estimates, they came out to 4800 and change, the three-tone paint I laid down on the front fender HOSED me. I wish i still had the facilities to paint it again. Sad though, they're likely going to have their insurance company write off the bike, and i'll have to repurchase it. Pain in the tuchus all around. Some day it'll stop raining and i'll get to ride for more than 20 minutes. Someday. This has been a terrible winter.
CTP is strange to us too. I think the government saw a 'cash cow' and are rubbing their hands glee as the $$$ roll in.
I don't think the government gets any of the CTP. The idea is that if someone (other than the driver at fault) is injured in a motorvehicle accident, their medical expenses are covered by the insurer, rather than the state's health system. In the UK, they have compulsory third party and property - imagine the pay of buying that each time you get a new vehicle, particularly if you're under 25?!! I recommend third party property insurance, it's cheap and better than paying off an expensive car for life that you never even get to drive. I have cheap cars, not worth the excess, but if I have an accident and damage someone's car, bike, house, etc. I'm covered by some insurance. In QLD, CTP is one set price for all the insurers, and I think it is set by the government, or so it seems. The price difference between single-seat and two-way motorcycles is the $90/6mths of CTP, no other rego costs change.
We don't even get single seat rego in NSW. It's a rort if you're in L or P plates since CTP covers pillions. No pillions allowed for L/P platers yet we still have to pay for an imaginary one!!
Just looked up the registration cost breakdown for 1 year's rego on my FZR250 here in South Australia And i am in the city area too 12 month's Registration - $40 CTP Insurance Premium - $151.35 (ex GST) GST component of CTP Insurance - $11.65 Stamp Duty on Insurance - $60 Emergency Service's Levy - $32 Lifetime Support Fund - $27 Administration - $7 Total $329
Really nice kiffsta, just like the 600 I had. I read that on the 750's, removing the steering damper makes it respond a lot better to handling inputs.
