Picked this up today while I was out with ute and trailer. Plated 1993. Has two lots of fairings in average condition, generally reasonable condition but only have the cylinder head (disassembled) and carbs of the engine. Any suggestions on what to do with it? ('Taking to the tip' will be treated with the disstain it deserves, ie ignored.) I had thought about fitting something like a KX500 two stroke to give it a bit of go. What do you recon?
Here's an 03 GPX motor on ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Engine-c...nja-2003-03-GPX250R-250R-EX250F-/191952461063
Thanks Linkin. I haven't really had a good look at it yet. Was thinking about a KX450 engine I know of sitting in a Go-Kart. Now that would make a snappy little track bike.
Well, after a trip to the coast yesterday I arrived home with this 1998 model and several boxes of bits. Most of it seems usable or repairable. The story from the PO is that he had the bike for a while, engine died so he bought a second hand engine from a wrecker in Melbourne and fitted it but could not get it to start and lost interest. Looking closely at it there was a lot of disconnected wires, so maybe he had no spark. Will give the whole thing a good clean up and service and see what happens. Plan is to put this one back on the road and use the spare bits (plus a bit of cash no doubt) to finish the first one (1993 model). Got it stripped today so I can get in and give everything a good clean. These are the rockers from the original engine. Has anyone seen this happen to these before? Wanna guess how it happened? Top left is a good one, top right has been without oil and chewed by the camshaft, bottom ones just broken without chewing.
KX500 - HELL YEAH!! now that's a big single conversion worth considering, or if they weren't rarer than hens teeth RZ350 donk
Actually here's a proposition, cams mistimed by 180 degrees, valves go slam, bits go bang, whaddayreckon??
I was more thinking... "Check this bro I'm gonna make this thing ping like $#!t it will go f#$^&g awesome, I just gotta advance the timing by like 180 degrees and I'll get 25hp man... beat the s#!t out of all those WRX's dude aye!"
So, the bike from Grafton had very low compression which I guess is why it would not run. I had ordered new std rings for the 93 bike, so today I pulled the engine out and stripped it down to find the rings stuck in the pistons. They took a bit of getting out and when measured I found they were .003" thicker than the rings I had bought. I cleaned the grooves out (back of Stanley knife blade) and used the rings I had bought. These gave .0015" clearance and fitted nicely with the end gap good too. Bought a can of the copper gasket spray, will see how it goes. Engine back together. And back in frame.
Got a couple of hours today to work on this one again. Got all the plumbing in and filled with coolant, all electrics in and working except for a blown blinker bulb, cables connected, filled oil, instruments fitted, rear frame and mudguard on too. Will buy a new battery tomorrow and see if it starts.
Got a new battery and gave it some fuel from a can suspended from the shed roof. Three winds and it was running. Had a bad rattle from the clutch at idle, thought I might have to pull the cover off and see. Went away when clutch lever pulled in and at over 2,000 rpm. Got the vacuum gauges hooked up and reset the carbs the same and rattle gone! Must have just been the cylinders fighting each other that was causing the gear teeth to rattle. Next week I hope to get the side and headlight fairings repaired and then some paint.
