hi guy's, about to change the chain and sprockets on the little accross. just trying to work out if i drop a couple teeth or add a couple or go with stock. just asking people's thoughts?
its a tough one, cause a little more get up and go would be good. or a bit more top end speed. not that you can really ever use it on the road.
You can get either or, for better speed and better acceleration you need a lighter bike or a bigger donk. The across is a bit of a heavyweight for a 250. If you find it doesn't get off the line quick enough, drop a tooth or two on the rear and see if you like it. This will affect your highway cruising RPM and noise levels, and you will sacrifice top speed.
An increase in teeth/size on the rear sprocket gives u better acceleration Thats why stunt bike sprockets look like this .....
I actually did change my front sprocket on my across 1 tooth down and yes you do gain a little acceleration however it tops out allot quicker and you will find your changing gears allot more frequently. The good thing is the speedo does stay correct because its measured front the front wheel. BUT I wouldn't a recommend it over stock. But that's just me, I am a big fan boy of stock settings after my failed attempts to make 250 4 strokes "better" hahaha.
so, i have ordered a new chain and sprockets, i ended up going stock as well as a 2nd front with one tooth down. that way i can test out what i like. can't come soon enough, as i was riding home today and felt a little strange and a couple noises and the backing plate on the link has gone. no riding till i get the new stuff and i might do the back wheel bearings at the same time.
The cir-clip holding the front sprocket on can be a bit though to remove, I managed to do it with screw drivers but it was risky because I could have broken the clip. If the noise continuous after you change the chain and sprockets there is a possibility it could be the timing chain/tensioner. Pics and outcome would be awesome =).
forgive my last comment, was real tired when i did that, had just done a 12 hour day. i will keep an eye on the cir-clip
so, new chain and sprockets. i have the one tooth down on the front. so far this week i have found, it still sits on the highway speeds not an issue. deff have more pick up and go with it as well. kinda liking it for my ride to work as i get away from dumb people just a little easier.
