Yea its surprising the old timers dont know about them ..... except Blair , who originally posted about such a thing on the FZR250 forum awhile back As far as I know they are on Japanese cars as well . Just trying a couple of screws on the carbs , the difference is huge ..... as soon as u apply pressure with the Philips it starts to jump out but the JIS holds tight.
Hi all, I have some Koken versions in the 3 sizes on the way and I am going to see how much I can ship them for. It should be easy enough to do them for a lower price than anyone else including shipping. Watch this space! cheers Blair
When I started my motorcycle apprenticeship, 40 years ago, I bought a set of tools from IBC-ESCA. It included a set of Koken T-Bars that had the JIS cross head. I don't know why that knowledge isn't more widespread. You will often find the best mechanics might do some work as a hobby, but it is not the best job on a full time basis. So all the good spanners tend to find other careers elsewhere. I have done a host of different jobs in my life and I also did a degree in software engineering at QUT (that didn't help me that much though). cheers
It crossed my mind about buying a bulkload of drivers and selling them for a reasonable price here......they dont seem very readily and easily available in this country or anywhere for that matter .... apart from tool sellers and bike owners not knowing they even exist.
Oh no! Don't get me started on shipping costs. If you don't live next door to a motorcycle shop plaza, you have to pay a king's ransom to buy anything because of shipping costs (buy now on "Flea Bay" only $16 +$200 for shipping) I was quoted 82 USD to ship some o-rings from the US to Thailand. I suggested a $2.80 airmail option, figuring that if they got lost I could repeat some 40 times before I reached their magic "shipping cost", but they told me it was company policy. I get a lot of orders from far flung places (none from Mongolia yet, but wait for it) and I think my shipping costs, or rather other people's shipping costs, have a lot to do with that. Speaking of which I'll have some prices on the Koken screwdrivers next week and see if I can keep the shipping low enough to make it worth while. It will just depend on where the buyer is. Otherwise I will have a new set of screwdrivers for me. cheers Blair
Exactly what I found buying the screwdrivers..... the ebayer I bought them from was $US17.75 shipping and another , exactly the same set , was $US43.95
I didn't get the full motorcycle set because I already had good flat screwdrivers. And I wanted two sizes of Impacta. I did buy enough to justify the shipping cost though. Couldn't resist their ratcheting screwdriver. It is the smallest I have seen. I can stick it in my boot to adjust the Lectron Powerjets during race day warmup laps.
Hi all, I will keep some Koken (good quality Japanese) JIS drivers in stock and I can do a good deal on shipping if you are ordering something else with the screwdrivers. I put a thread here http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/koken-jis-crosshead-phillips-screwdrivers.1469/ cheers Blair
They will be there .... not all have the dimple The carbys will have the dimpled ones ...unless someone has changed them out. Once u use a quality JIS screwdriver u will not use anything else.
The heads of the screwdrivers in my onboard toolkits look like JIS but I always try the good JIS drivers before I try the impact driver. Only had problems with screws already too chewed by incorrect tools a few times - most of the time the JIS drivers work brilliantly.
