Hi everyone, So I bought the bike listed online and had it shipped. Has just arrived and I must say it is in amazing condition! Very happy with it so far... doesn’t run though-previous owner says it’s been sitting for a year or two and probably needs carbs cleaned? Anyone have any suggestions as to how I go about this? It cranks over well and sounds very healthy.

@GreyImport haven’t pulled the tank off yet, just got the rear fairings off and noticed I couldn’t hear the fuel pump going when I do crank it over. Checked for power at the pump and there’s nothing. Tried putting a trickle charger power source onto the pump but doesn’t sound like it’s running anyway. I was hoping I could take the tank off so to expose the carb intakes and try a quick spray of petrol to see if it’ll start. Thanks for the links I will definitely go through them.
I cant remember ever having a fuel pump fail .... except the Chinese cheap charlie I tried just for the heck of it Have a close look at the plug and wiring on the pump Definately try to start it as u said .... even just take the top off the airbox and remove the filter It may just run like a champ ..... but Ill eat my hat if it does
So fuel drained, tank off, air filter off(which looks brand new) and a spray bottle with fuel in it and she fired right up sounds a million bucks too be honest. Why the fuel pump isn’t going I’m not sure. I did check power to it so any ideas where the relay is.
So gave the fuel pump a few taps and away she goes! I was just measuring power to the pump after the relay had turned off(so stuck the multi meter prongs in and watched it while I flicked the ignition on +14v) the fuel in the tank smells good and I can’t see any grime or build up in there. Maybe I’ll put her back together and see what happens?
Most definately! Im now looking for edible hats online The big test is how it runs under load .... that is, with u on it on the road Have u checked the sight glass for the oil level? .... the red oil light denotes oil level in a 3LN1 , not oil pressure
With tank back on I’ve managed to get it running, holding throttle and keeping the Revs up. Doesn’t run well and smells odd out the exhaust, so don’t be too quick on that edible hat. Yup checked fluids, they’re like new, matter of fact looks like this bike has had a full rebuild or just been really well looked after. Before I go touching the carbs though is it worth putting some fresh fuel in her and letting it burn through what’s left in the carbs - I’d hate to rebuild the carbs only because the fuel is stale. Does stale fuel smell odd out the exhaust, almost like avgas or kerosene
Yes go the new fuel first I would think it would smell pretty ordinary if it hasnt run for years 91 is what we usually use here in Oz for the FZRs You could even drain the fuel bowls on each carb ... theres a drain screw on each bowl
I’ve had it running for half hour or so and progressively getting better. Can now rev it quite well, went for a quick spin around the block and responds well so far. Won’t idle well though - almost sounds like the choke is partially stuck on, I know the note because of my other fzr. Definitely going to refresh the fuel. Uhh any pointers as to where the fuel bowl drains are?
You may find them in the aisle next to the edible underwear in establishments which also cater for kinky cowboys
Stale fuel smells like varnish which makes you want to wretch. BTW if you're going to drain the float bowls, measure the fuel height at the same time to see where you're at. As with anything, check, before making any adjustments
Thanks @GreyImport. Yeah smelt like vanish @ruckusman - drained the tank again and put that fuel aside for the mower I recon. Bought some high octane 98 and put that in(why wouldn’t you run a high as possible octane it’s a 12:1 compression engine) runs a lot better but still not quite right, I skipped draining the floats for now and will just try run it ‘clean’. @maelstrom A carb sync tool, it’s basically a 4way manometer. I could almost just make one but I agree with buying one or borrowing. Hopefully I can source one for the right price. Well hopefully I don’t need to go down that road. I can see the carbs have been apart once so am hoping the previous owner has done the hard yards for me. Does anyone know where to buy a reasonably priced one?
I think ebay, trade me NZ or gumtree or whatever you have available would be a good first choice You can bench sync carbs also, many have had success with that technique, a tiny wire - a thickish strand out of a piece of electrical cable which just catches below the butterfly will suffice, or a 1mm drill bit You adjust #3 first, using the idle adjustment to get that one right with the wire/drill bit just catching, then #2 to match #3, then #1 to match #2 and #4 to match #3, once all 4 are matched, put them back on and adjust the idle
