Does anyone know what material the original fairings are made of? Previous owner dropped the bike and I want to properly plastic weld the panels together (atm it's covered in poorly bonded fibreglass reinforced epoxy). I'm assuming its injection moulded ABS or PP...
epoxy or polyester fibreglass resin does stick pretty well to ABS. Like with painting, issue is adequate preparation. Surface must be cleaned and degreased. Along with sanding, 80-100 grit is best.
Yeah it's ABS, best off with plastic the welding method ABS is used on lot's of thing's including car part's, toy's etc etc So if you get stuck you can use some old Lego and melt it down with some Acetone to make a thick paste Even use old broken fairing's, make sure the old paint is cleaned off everything well before welding with it https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ABS-Pla...174594?hash=item3fcd3b9882:g:L60AAMXQnFhTkJ4U
Awesome, thanks for the replies. I had intended to go with the acetone/abs paste method but i do have a spare soldering iron handy so maybe i'll pick up some rods from bunnings and give that a whirl.
Hey Cmor, Did you manage to fix it up alright? I low sided my zxr250a yesterday, on the right side. Very minor but the fairings need a touch up. So happy the bike is OK. But if you wouldn't mind sharing what you did, i would greatly appreciate that. I have some 2 step epoxy that I used for my snowboard. But I've never done any plastic repair really.
