I put an add on Gumtree looking for an Across for parts and I received a reply last night from someone wanting to offload a 1990 model in Mt Warren Park, he said it hadnt run since 2004. Phil and I went out tonight and picked it up, she looks pretty sweet, but after lifting the hand bag, I have noticed a few sins such as some custom wiring and weird fuse holders :icon_scratch:. I poured in some fresh fuel and hooked a battery up and hit the starter button, she wants to fire but wont, even with some start ya bastard she fires and dies. The carbies are now off, and Im going to dump the oil and we will see if we can get her running. I have really missed having an Across, lets see how it pans out. stay tuned
For a bike that has sat for so long, the carbs weren't anywhere near as bad as I thought they would be. Noticed some arking when trying to start her, new leads and plugs should assist. The thread on one of the bowls was shot, luckily we had a spare, fixed. The emulsion tubes needed some serious cleaning but overall not too bad. Today I will tinker a little and try and get her going properly. Nice to have an Across back in the shed.
A brief update! purchased new plugs and some leads wire yesterday. Fitted plugs OK but attaching new wire is proving to be far more challenging. One length of wire was like a solid mass of metal, obviously heat was a contributing factor. Kept cutting wire back until wire was found to be sound, half the length of the lead was dispensed with before this happened. The lead to spark plug cap was easy enough but getting the other end onto the coil was MISSION IMPOSSIBLE !!! Lack of room is the cause, have to remove coil to finish this up. Is there an easy way to attach coil or cap to wire, I'm struggling to get them started. Used a nail to create an opening to get started, not easy. Any help appreciated. :BangHead:
what sort of lead wire are you using? is it single core or multicore? when i replaced my leads on my across i got the multicore stuff and it was a piece of cake. from memory it was 7mm outside diameter. if it is too thick it wont go in the cap or coil correctly cos its too wide
Thanks fellows, got the job done. Used single core which I bought from my mechanic, anything larger wouldn't fit the coil.
i thought they were all one piece as in the leads were attached to the coil. luckily the leads on my spare bike were ok so i just swapped the whole lot over lol
nah mate, the lead screws in to the coil and the plug cap. inside where the lead attaches to there is a silver colour screw that sits out. the lead screws into this with multicore wire its much easier to screw it in to the terminal as the wires will spread apart, plus the single core wire if the wire breaks you will end up with the fault i had on my across where you chase your tail trying to find a miss-fire it wasnt till i went nuts and replaced the leads i got the thing working betterish!! the single core lead i had when i removed it from the bike if i layed it out flat in a stright line it was open circuit (no power could pass along the wire) but when i started to twist and turn it it would then be a closed circuit (let power pass) i has this on 2 plugs. to unwind the lead from either end, remember righty tighty, lefty loosie and your all good!
looks like it's in really good nick! Good luck with getting it running sweet. Body looks mint  Doesn't look like it has been dropped either.
Thanks for the info on that I was told it was all one piece I'm gunna have to look into getting some multi wire core and go through and replace mine as I got a minor intermittent minor misfire in mine cheers
Yes we had her running, the carbs were a mess and even with a good clean, they still had issues, I fitted a spare set I had and she revved out to 16,000 with ease, howevere there was a chattering noise in the engine as well as a few other issues that basically made it an expensive fix, with 90000kms on the clock it wasnt going to be worth much as a going concern so the decision was made to part it out. Im posting up parts in the classifieds as time permits.
