Well I nearly fell off my perch, I phoned Fowlers to get hold of an air filter for my 91 3LN and was told £46 <!-- s:shock: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_eek.gif" alt=":shock:" title="Shocked" /><!-- s:shock: --> Is a pattern part available, and if so does anybody know where I can get one in the UK. T.I.A.
Just thought i'd chime in now about the home-made option costing all of $12 for 2. It's made by removing the paper element, but keeping the metal bits on the ends of it. Go down to a friendly foam and rubber store (Clarks for us Australian's) and find some nice open cell foam. If you can get K&N or one of the equivalents to send you out a sample piece from one of their filters, then take that in and try and match it up. I ended up using 2 layers of 6mm foam, then using the 2 metal pieces to squash the ends in to keep it all sealed and flat. Don't forget to liberally apply the foam filter oil and massage it all the way through. PS. £46 is about right... actually i think that might be cheaper than what i got quoted! £46=$115AU... yep, i got quoted $124.
Yeh I was thinking of filter foam, I figured that I could get 2 for £10, I take it you have had no issues using foam, lightly oiled I expect.
I'm still ironing out the quirks of it given i've never really tried anything like this before. I initially had 3 layers of foam and found it too restrictive, so backed it down to 2 and it worked perfectly! I'm planning on giving it a rinse and re-doing it in a couple of weeks so i'll take some proper photo's and see if i can write it up.
