    I've had a similar experience to you @dave , albeit in a car. I used to have a VR v8 POS Commodore (ex-pursuit, funnily enough) that had a stupid 3inch exhaust that made it sound like the four horsemen of the apocalypse riding down an avalanche.
    One night my wife and I were just turning out from the local cinemas (Armadale, for the WA people) and we got followed and pulled over by three police cars! About 10 of WA's finest get out and surround the car and one guy comes up to the window saying "licence and registration...". As soon as he saw my 51 year-old mug he straightened up and called out "No, they're all right" and told me to be on my way. None of them even looked at the car and I know for a fact that it would have got a defect for the stupid exhaust if nothing else.
    Gotta be some advantage to getting older, right? :)
