    Scored a running 92 for a cool 2k.

Going to register it/him/her for a commuter to college and work.

pads/fluids/oils and filters will be a standard replacement to start with.

any recommendations as to what to "fine tooth comb" look/check before blasting on the roads?

my fine tooth comb inspection found some very strange things.

after a massive degrease, the head gasket needs replacing (massive noise and smoke coming from number 1 and two pot area).

The tank rubber on the left side seems to have been missing for a while and has rubbed the paint off the frame and tank.

The right side carb cover plastic has broken from its mounts.

The wiring for the instruments only had one bulb (wire) for the tacho. Since replaced with a proper one and a non cracked idiot lights case from the same seller. (he whacked it in for free)

The mounting screw holder on the speedo for the chrome cover has broken off.

According to the japanese parts list I got from here, being a premium member an all, my frame is an zp (gj74a-125385), but the model sticker under the riders seat says gsf250np. The colour code seems right, still yet to figure what the second code means.

Chain and sprockets are good to go with a bit of chain wax.

That being said, the only main concern that I have is:

Am I able to check the valve chain to see if it needs replacing before I take the head off to replace the head gasket?

The cam chain you mean? Yeh just pull out the tensioner it's behind the engine. Check how far it is protruded out, if it is fully extended you have a problem. If it's somewhere in the middle you're ok.

I still have quite a few bandit bits (including a cam chain tensioner and other engine bits) if you need parts. Looking to offload it all cheaply now it's hanging around (mine was a '91 GSF250P (GJ74A engine)) so sounds the same as yours. I did quite a bit of work on it before deciding to scrap it (various reasons, long story) so PM me if you need help. Have a few resources up my sleeve too.

thanks for the help so far guys.

another quick question is: can I use other gsx250 workshop manuals as a rough guide for tension settings etc.

I cant seem to find new replacement cylinder head nuts for sale or in stock, and would prefer to use new or superseded parts than going to the local nut and bolt shop and winging it.

I've got some let me know what you need. The gsxr250 manual for the gj73a is closest to the gj74a. Torque settings are on a synapse site translated from Japanese.. Can't remember it off hand but google it and you'll find it.

If u need help with the Japanese let me know, I can also send you various files.
