Oh my God, that was awesome!
I just had my fourth hour of instruction and it was a whole new world of fantastic-ness!
At my instructors suggestion today I rode in a pair of old doc's instead of the fancy boots I had been wearing and I could actually feel the gear shift and rear brake, instead of putting my feet in the right place and hoping for the best.
Furthermore, I removed the massive foam overgrips that the previous owner had installed on my ZZR. My hands are pretty small and reducing the grip thickness by 50% completely changed how my bike felt in my hands.
We had a big focus on U-turns, at my request, both in Wednesday's lesson and today. Wednesday I sucked and came home exhausted and well, not unhappy because how can you be unhappy when you've been on your bike, let's call it unfulfilled.
Today, around about the 7th or 8th turn, I jammed my inside knee really hard against the tank and, suddenly, it all went 'click' in my head. Every U-Turn I did was easy. No, more than easy, it was fun! Suddenly I could ride really tight circles, with even power and good clutch control and I couldn't get enough of it!
So, once I had that nailed, he took me to a very narrow back street he knew, with gravel shoulders and got me to do repeated U-turns from the gravel. Easy! Can I do it again?
I found myself doing turns while he was sharing stories about previous learners, just reveling in those tight circles.
We did a couple of E-stops but, as he said, "...good, hard stops have never been your problem..." Awesome! Can we go do more U-turns now?
Instead we went riding through the back streets with a lot of dog-leg turns and everything was gravy. (Man, that buzz from leaning one way and then immediately doing a hard turn the other way just can't be beat, can it? Even at legal speeds it is incredible; it must be awesome doing that on a track!) Then I'm sure we just went riding wherever he felt like going and everything was sweet, pulled up in the right places, looped around roundabouts easily, not in the slightest bit phased when some idiot turned across me without indicating. Everything was chill and fun:)
Man, that was the best day I've had this year!
