    Hey fellas (and ladies)

More of a curiousity then a problem, but i have a slight suspicion my thermostat is stuck open.

On the temp gauge on a usual day around this time of the year, im lucky if the needle registers barely past the start of the white zone on the gauge. But in traffic it will run up to halfway where the fan comes on as per normal. So not really a problem.

Thing is there's quite a change in idle RPM between the temp where the fan comes on (i.e. in traffic) and when ive just come off the freeway and stopped at a set of lights. its a bit annoying.

Soooo the question is, where does the needle on the temp gauge usually sit on your across' while riding it?

    Thanks!

    Hey Desmo

Mine runs about 1/3 up the gauge when riding it normally, but when stuck in traffic the temp climbs pretty quick and the fan kicks in when the temp gauge is reading between 2/3 to 3/4, If you riding on longer stretches then its very rare the fan will kick in, however I was commuting on mine and stop -> start traffic would send it into the red...  as the Across is a "4 pot screamer", they need plenty of fresh air coming in at speed to keep the temp under control, the fan does do a pretty good job to cooling it down.

And yes, the revs drop as the fan draws a fair amount of current  when running

    Hey Desmo
The electrics on the Suzuki Across do not have much in reserve and consequently when the fan comes its drawing pretty close to maximun power. If you feel uncomfortable with the temperature rise and all points to thermostat, I would change it for a new one. Having said that, the fact is that the fan comes on means it is working but may perhaps not open fully.
A new thermostat and some fresh new coolant may well rectify this problem, hope this helps, keep us posted.                        Phil

Cheers, Im actually having the opposite problem, the bike never seems to heat up to begin wit!, the only time the bike gets ABOVE 1/3 on the guage is when its in traffic (when all works well) :) Ill snap a pic of the gauge and draw the temp ranges it runs at later on.

Ill probably grab a new one as a matter of course anyway and see what happens. Action MC want $60 and a month lead time for a new one, so hopefully suziparts comes through (as always heh). worst case ill have to raid supercheap to see if any small car ones fit.

    Alrighty conclusion time  8)

Ripped the bike apart and got the thermo housing out with a little persuasion

This is what the setup looks like for those interested. The idiot wrecker i got the sender off of broke the tab off, so i had to solder a wire on then encase it in epoxy if you were wondering :p

hmm.. there shouldn't be a hole all the way through that  :o

Nice job distant previous owner haha, that sure explains alot.

When putting the new one in don't forget the air bleed hole must be at 12 o clock when the thermostat housing is mounted up, as such.

This is what the guts look like. nothing too special thar. The housing comes apart in 3 sections but you only need to take the rear bell shaped bit off, No gasket required. If you take the other side off by accident tho there is an O ring.

So yeah it happily runs up to a decent temp in about 5km now and stays there. Happy days! shame it cost $55 for the part. bit more then id like to have paid but the job is done anyway.

Mine runs about the same levels, in warmer weather in the traffic/city it does climb and it scared me the first time it nearly got to red before the fan kicked in, but all was fine even running that hot. One day the temp rose on the way home and didn't stop, hit the red and kept going but the fan didn't kick in and it didn't feel hot. Turns out the guage/sensor had gone so it was just showing wrong.

Hey Rex, I know what high temperature is all about. Apart from the 250 I have a 2005 CBR1100 and when I rode it for the first time in traffic got the shock of my life. The temperature reached 103. Quick visit to my mechanic and was assured that they are built to run hot. Checked the Blackbird site and the comment from riders all over the world was the same, THEY RUN HOT. Today I don't give it a second thought, the fan cuts in at 101 and does its job. On the highway temp is around 83.
                                                                Cheers  Phil
