Have noticed since i purchased my bike that as soon as you turn on the ignition the thermo fan comes on! im unsure on why this is happening and the only thing i can think of is the previous owner has rewired it.

I have cut the wire (positive i think) and wired it up to a switch for now so i can start and warm the bike up without killing the battery power then switch it on manually but like most things i like them to work properly. Thermostat it probably removed too as it takes a fair while to warm up.

Any ideas on why thermo fan would be set to come on with ignition? and any one know how to change it back?

    Cheers!  8)

The only sound you should hear when the key is switched on is the electric fuel pump doing it's business for a few seconds. Think your on the money with the wiring having been tampered with. The fan coming on when starting any engine is fundamentally wrong. The object is for the engine to begin to warm up to reach optimum temperature. Would check wiring and thermostat to ascertain whats happening.
Would think checking a wiring diagram will provide the answer to your dilemma.

Best i can come up with is faulty cooling fan switch possibly stuck to the on position as i checked all the wiring on the bike and it looks factory. Doesn't seem to have been tampered with.

Thanks for the wiring diagram and service manual link's

Will boil thermostat at the suggested temp tomorrow to see if its opening correctly.

I suppose the positive side is that it may take 5-10 mins to start to get warm with manual switch off. Then between 1/3 -1/2 ill switch on thermo fan manually and it hold its temp and starts to drop in temp ( at least its not overheating) :hello2:

Will update if my cooling fan sensor thing is buggered or not....

Tampering with the fan is very easy. In the main wiring bundle that passes over the engine near the battery tray there's a pair of bullet connectors. You can just swap them around to make the fan come on with the ignition. It's really handy to do it yourself when balancing the carbs as it takes longer for the bike to heat up.

The sender could dead or they snapped off the tab on the bottom too which  might be the reason for the mod if the bike doesn't overheat. (which is very easy to do, not that... i'd know... >.> haha)

When working proper the fan should come on at about halfway on the gauge and it shouldn't go much above that even on a hot day.

The sender should be very cheap from the wreckers. Test it out when you take the thermostat housing out :) my bike also didn't come with a 'stat either. Gotta wonder what some people are thinking at times!  :o Good luck fixing it!

Quite interesting! I assume the cooling sensor that activates the fan threads into the thermostat housing? if so i found a wire leading off it that was plugged into itself male/female bullet connector.

The wires lead to nowhere else so to me it looks like the other wires running to fan connect into this. this activates fan after it heats up. After i wired it back up i turn on ignition and get no thermo fan!

    Will test out tomorrow .

Cheers Desmo you made me have another look at the wiring and realise something wasn't right but seems plain obvious that this is part of my problem!  :BangHead:

Yep the sensor threads into the bottom, it has one wire coming off it. Sounds like it should work just sweet! Here's hoping :)

Brought a new one and all is good! Thought i would add this in case anyone else has this problem and finds this thread!

    Cheers to all who helped!
