    Hi!
I've got a GSX250 EX '81, which among other electrical issues seems to be in need of a new ignition coil. Are there any aftermarket ignition coils available? For instance companys like Electrex make aftermarket coils, would something fit? The current coils are a mismatched pair, the right one is stamped 3201TR12, which I think is an original coil (and also the one that seems to be dead), the other one is stamped MP06 and Google says is a Honda coil.
I could buy old coils from Ebay, but the price + postage fees would be rather high, so if there are new coils available I would prefer these. Any ideas?

Look in the manuals section and get part number, then google the number and see what you find.

Thank you for your replies! Didn't expect new coils to be that expensive. I'll lure around the local shops to see what they can come up with, but it seems that I have to go with the used ones then.

OK, my bike still don't run. No spark. The igniter, the regulator rectifier, the igniton coils, the spark plugs and the fuse have been replaced. The kill switch has been opened and cleaned and measured with multimeter - works. Various connectors all over the bike have been cleaned, several wires replaced etc. I have tried to run it from two different 12V car batteries, nothing. Very occasionally it gives a weak spark, once it was from both plugs, but mostly only the right one, usually it dosen't spark at all. Presuming that I don't own now two broken igniters, what do I have then left, the pickup coils, the stator? The three stator wires measured fine, referring no shorts, but who knows as the motor didn't run. Can a stator do that, no spark? Also, is the stator in oil, so that I have to drain the engine before opening the cover?

Lie the bike on its side so the oil drains away from the sidecase you wish to remove. My next suggestion after all you have done would be the pick up coil. Can you find the values to measure it?

As suggested check ignition pick up and any circuits that kill the ignition. For exmple, sidestand switch.

How many volts are you getting at the coils when trying to start?

Murdo: the resistance for each pickup measured 62 ohms, manual gives the range 60–80 ohms. I have to measure the coils again to give you the volt numbers. I will measure that when I go to the garage.
Maelstrom: there's no sidestand switch on the circuit diagram and I doubt that someone has installed one after the bike left the factory, but I'll keep my eyes open for that anyway, thanks for the tip.

    Murdo: both coils get 12V.
Teared a lot of tape off the main wiring harness, found a suspicious place where, if the wires were bended, the spark appeared/disappeared from the right side plug (the left one showed still no spark at all). Thought that this is it. Tested the wires with multimeter, everything was OK. We put a parallel wire to the suspicious one - nothing.
Then I took the stator off. As stated before, the stator had measured fine - no shorts. But, the stator is black. There's no protruding wires or anything, but the whole stator looks rather black. Suspicious. I hope to show it soon to someone more knwoledgeable than I am and then think further. If the stator is bad I'll change it. If not, then back to wires and collecting €€€ for replacement pickup coils.

Don't have a camera here currently, so I made these pictures with a phone. The photos may show the colour a tad darker than it really is, but you'll get the idea.

Well, I got the confirmation today that the stator is good.

Is there any sign of the ends of the winding been touching the rotor?
    Are the wires melted/burnt?

Murdo: no, just the dark colour was kind of wierd, but a guy whose knowledge I trust checked that stator and said it's fine, and also that this bike should run even without a stator and a regulator/rectifier attached, that is, only from a battery.
So my problem lies somewhere between the pickup coils, igniter and ignition coils. We will try to make now a new test wiring for the bike, just a minimum with what the bike should run, without the stator, regulator/rectifier, lights etc., and see if it sparks.

Keep at it, you will eventually track down the problem.
