All The Right Gear , All the Time

When I first started out to get my motorcycle license, my Qride instructor made it very clear that I must wear a helmet, jacket and gloves during the course, plus long trousers and closed shoes. My trainer spent alot of time working through the importance of wearing safety gear and used to always say to me that when you ride you must have All the Right Gear, All the Time.

So what is the right gear ?

    Helmet
An Australian Standards approved helmet, follow these 4 guidelines when choosing a lid.

Step 1 - Have your head size measured before you try on a helmet. Measure around the largest part of your head just above the ears, taking the measurement at the forehead. The measurement will correspond to a particular size in the model range you are interested in. This is a good starting point. If you want a particular brand or model, do not be tempted to go for another size if yours is out of stock

Just a brief foot note re: HELMETS. Many sites today offer helmets on line for purchase. Experience has taught me that no two manufactures are the same and sizes vary greatly. I have 2 helmets at home, both fit well and yet both are different sizes.
So, if purchasing on line check the brand and head down to your local bike shop and try it on, guaranteed to save you some heartache down the track.  Phil

Phil makes a great point, every helmet manufacturer uses a slightly different shell size and shape, the better ones even offer different shell sizes in a particular range.

Everyone also has a different shaped head, some more oval than round.

A round helmet on an oval head will induce a headache in seconds, so it is so important to try a helmet on, if bung from a shop, try to avoid purchasing the showroom article unless you negotiate a significant discount, you have no way of knowing who has tried it on and whether it has been dropped or not.  NEVER BUY A SECOND HAND HELMET.

Store in a dry dark place, helmets have a usable life of around 5 years, depending on use and storage, if you ride all day every day that life span will be as little as 1 year, if you ride only at weekends and  you "care for your helmet", (yes I know, but it made you smile), that lifespan will go out to 7-10 years.

Please remember to gear up for every ride, especially to the local shops.

    Stay safe.
