So is it possible I could damage the engine using the older igniter unit?

Not sure, I wasnt aware the newer model Across had variable valves, when did they bring this in  ?

I thought that was only available on the GSF250 Bandit .

Hmm, did some reading last night and i can't read anything that says they did, Though one of the across' i test rode before buying mine had the red top (vvt) motor in it. So perhaps that had a bandit engine in it. Not sure! Seems they may not have then. Ill keep reading anyway lol.

Speaking of which, is it easy to put a bandit 400cc engine in an Across?

@artemis, this is an old thread revisited, I havent owned an across for quite a while.

@Bradwatts, I havent heard of a 400cc bandit engine in there, but I did hear a ruour someone shoehorned an older GS500 engine into an across frame, now that would be fun !!!

OMG i had a gigantic reply and the freakin forum had an internal server error and i lost it >:C But here's an abridged version.

No it won't fit basically without major mods. The bottom rear engine mount lines up perfect, but the front one doesn't (needs an entirely new frame cradle to even make it come close to working) and the rear top mount is much too wide. Plus you can't rotate the engine back far enough to make it work using any of the stock mounts.

A new 2nd cradle would have to be made which bolts to the stock mounts and moves the motor further foward, so you can rotate it up right allowing a radiator to be fitted (there's no room when you use any of the stock mounts). I'd like to find a 2nd frame and just cut and weld on new mounts, but i haven't looked into the legality of that WRT the VIN and stuff. (putting the 400cc in without being engineered is hardly legal anyway lol)

In saying that though it will fit otherwise. The carbs and head fit between the chassis rails and the stock sprocket
is in the right position so that lines up perfect.

This is how i know - gsxr400 engine :p Ill finish it off one day when i get a 2nd bike. Bit hard to do it when its your only ride! :p

The difference between the stock mounts and the engine mounts, much wider on the motor (the steel bit is a little adaptor i made to hold it while the engine was jammed into the frame lol)

Its a 91 model, i think the early model ones have the big tail light and smaller, square shaped indicators then the later models That's what I've noticed at wreckers anyway :p

Frame would be awesome! I've got tons of projects at the moment i have to finish but i may be up in QLD mid year if you still have it around then :) Will Pm you about it when i get a bit of spare time to devote to the project  :(

Really craving a bit of extra power after having a ride on a friends worked up rs125 lol!
