So recently why looking for something to get my as on fairly cheaply I decided to buy a bandit that was advertised as not running.

    Pic from Ad.

Was attracted to it mainly for the price and the fact that it already has a few things done I was planning anyway, clip ons, tail chop, led lights and stuff like that.

So once getting it home the inspection started.

    Damage on the tank
    [IMG]

And stripping it to see whats actually going on.

So after charging the battery, a bit of time thinking and looking at stuff and putting the firing order back in the correct order, and hooking the coils up correctly it fired up after only a couple of spins and purred like a kitten. I suspect it has a faulty fuel tap which is just pouring fuel into the carbs. If that's all it is then its all going to be and easy fix.

Plan from here is to get it running correctly, tidy up a lot of the wiring, change all the fluids, put a tire on it, then vinyl wrap everything to cover over all the defects.

Will keep things updated as best I can.

i'll be watching this, love the little bandits.

just be mindful with vinal, it does show up the imperfections if they are gouges, paint chips or dents. :)

Think you have done well with this purchase, bike looks to be in pretty good nick considering it's age.
Fact that she started up after a few adjustments is brilliant. Petcock seem to be a common problem, I
have an issue with mine also, easy enough fix.
One area to peruse is inside the headlight, mine had some rust developing, again an easy fix.
Look forward to watching with interest your progress, good luck with it.:thumb_ups:

I like the tail and clip ons. It looks awesome. After the minor fixes you may have yourself a sweet bandit. Matte orange vinyl?

So spent a couple of hours working on the bike.
Pulled off the carbs and cleaned out all the crap. Still couldn't get it to start with out a little fuel down each carb. So gave all the fuel lines a good blow though with the compressor and got it stated. Worked out after a little while that the throttle cable was stuck somewhat open. It does seem its got the wrong cable on it, or its jammed up somewhere as its about 10mm to short. So once that was out managed to get it to start nice and easy. So it needs a new choke and throttle cable, which is no big deal. Also found the headers had one bolt holding them on. Once all 8 were in its was much quieter, as you can see in the shitty video below.

So now it needs a good go over with the degreaser and I'll start sorting out the electrics, brakes, chain and sprocket before starting on the paint and getting it roadworthy.

Also just discovered the throttle cable was in the wrong hole on the hand piece. Think it has damaged the cable as it seems too tight, it does return to the correct position now though. Think a new one wont hurt as its the kind of thing you don't want to jam up.

Great stuff mate, be keen to know what you find - doing a bottom end rebuild on mine at the moment. I have a spare petcock you can have for parts if you want, it's missing the fuel line insert in the side though.

Petcock seems fine after a clean just going to keep an eye on it for now.

Basically everything thing I have found wrong with this bike is due to human error / stupidity.

Could not agree with you more. For reason unknown, stupidity reigns supreme at times....... Can't tell you how many times I've encountered an issue, scratched my head and said "WHY", most times it makes no sense at all???????

Since most faults are caused by owners, the secret to diagnosing faults is to find out what the owner did to their motorcycle. always difficult if you bought it second hand. The other important thing to note is that owners invariably treat symptoms and never look for causes. So they change main jets, fit the wrong spark plugs, fit new batteries, throw air cleaner boxes away, pull things apart and put them back together incorrectly, lose parts and so on. Then after the trail of destruction is so vast that there seems to be no going back they announce to the world "I hate this piece of garbage. I'm going to sell it". The upside to that is that if you have a reasonable amount of mechanical nous and some amount of product knowledge you can pick up some bargains. :thumb_ups:

Yep after all the playing around with this bike I'm sure all the problems started with incorrectly fitted hand controls when the clipon's were fitted.

The I think it snowballed. Fairly sure in the background there would have been a "mate" who knows all about bike.

Keep up the good work. Are you going to fit the original seat tail or leave as is?
Judging by the number of kits I sell for the baby Bandit it is quite a rare bike, and it is always going to be worth more if original.

I've been looking at boots and shoes for 4 weeks now. All of a sudden a wild pair of boots appear and its all done.

Got a new rear tire hugger as the old one had been cut up. So cleaned and painted it.

Also painted the gauge cups and headlight back

Happy with the finish might even do the whole bike in the same satin finish yet.
