Yep, black smoke. more disconcertingly it's using a bit of oil... Had to top up in under a month...

Anyway, this all started really after I replaced the oil & filter and started using motul semi synth 15W-50

Dont say it, 'no not the rings' as I might as well just live with it as a new engine is out of the question and its not real bad yet, just when higher revving and yes even when fully warmed up etc.

I was hoping it may just be running a bit rich.

Any suggestions on how to tell the difference easily & some possible solutions?

    Thanks

That'd be my guess. Possibly worn emulsion tubes and incorrect float heights. A good dissambly and cleaning of the carbs couldn't hurt.

LOL if the oil that was used b4 was mineral... or not changed for a LONG time... the new oil being a semi synth could be "cleaning" your engine... observe and note any changes... especialy oil consumption...

The more rpm you do the more fule your bike should burn so I don think it is runing rich in the higher rpm. Like T bone sed It might be cleaning it self out. The motor in these bikes revs so high that you will get blow by one way or the other soon as yor rings go.
