Nice site you guys have going here..quite impressed

Im a new owner of a FZR 250, and I was wondering what's some good gear to get me started? Being a uni student on a tight budget..im only looking at spending around 600 dollars on gear. Most of my riding will be in dry weather atm. Ive got a second hand helmet atm, so im prob just looking at getting gloves, boots, jacket and pants for the time being.

Any suggestions?

Hi Grendal & welcome to the FZR250 community!

Ok first of all where are you located?
If in Sydney I recommend checking out Sydney City Motorcycles in Kogarah. When I last went in there last week they had a special on quite a few Teknic gloves (the upper models) which usually cost a heap. They were between $80 - $120 from memory. Also try MCAS, who are in Sydney CBD, near Central Station or Parramatta near Westfield. Their site is www.mcas.com.au or also try www.motorcycle-accessories.com.au

You are best to check out your local dealer, maybe some melbournies can give a few shop names to help you out. boots are quite expensive.. for a decent pair their about 200-300. i bought mine for 400 i think. jacket u can probably get for 200 - 300 though it wont be a leather one. if possible i recommend u save up abit more to get some good average gear, leather jackets look nice and protect heaps! i know i fell twice. . for pants, draggin jeans are good. $200, gloves around $100.. so you have $300 for boots and jacket.. ull probably wont get the boots as they just cost too much.. a good pair of boots from the shoe stop is better luck i would think.

The first place I would like to point you is to http://www.torrinileathers.com.au/. They sell both leathers and cordura/kevlar combination jackets. You can get similar cordura/kevlar stuff from dealers, and they will have a wider selection, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. But if you want a cheap set of leathers that is the best place to get to. They almost always throw in a set of gloves with it.

Second place I would point you to, and I realise you are in the west, but the Ringwood set of bike shops. They do not have the overhead of the city shops, and as a result tend to sell things much cheaper. Specifically look at Bike Mart - great deals. netrider (another online riding group - see http://www.netrider.org.au - primarly based in Melbourne) have set up a shopping night at Bike Mart on July 28 (7:30-9:00), where we have been promised many great deals on gear and accessories. If you could make it there I would recommend it on that night (you do not need to be a netrider member - as long as you show up the retailers are happy).

I am not sure about the shops in the West unfortunately (I am in the South East) but if you look around you will eventually find some good deals. I only know of Peter Stevens out that way, and their specials are good, but they rarely have those...

Good luck! Hopefully the weather improves a bit - no fun in the damp/wet.

Good point - if you buy everything from the same place deals could be had. Even just getting a pair of decent gloves thrown in is worth it (as they are $60+)

Well I think I found an alright deal...Second hand though. Its a dririder alphine jacket ($600), shark -foggarty replica helmet ($440), and some dririder extreme pants (??). All up for 400 dollars.

I know they say dont buy a second hand helmet, but I personally reckon thats a bit overrated...if the helmets been dropped on the road ur gonna see scratches...
