Cam holder removal

    guys,
    quick question, and to make it easier heres a photo by another member of this forum i discovered...lol

    see the cam holders,theres a left and right side and they need to be undone diagonally.

    my question is. do you do undo the left side completely then the right side completely

    or

    do you use some imagination and pretend the left and right side is one giant piece and work diagonally around it and get them both undone together?

    hope this makes sense

    Hey ozbiker

    Have thought about your question and looked at the photo several times.
    Must confess that I haven't done this on an Across, however I did it on a Kawasaki zxr250 which has the cam and tension er on the left hand side of the engine. Undoing it and tensioning it back up was done by cross over affair in order for the cam to sit correctly.
    This crossing took what seemed like forever to do, but I could visual see the cam coming down until sitting in it's correct position within the head.
    Having said that, it took me several goes before I got it right.
    My guess is the same would apply to the Across. I did this whilst the engine was in the bike.
    With the aid of hindsight, probably would be far simpler to have the engine on a bench, bit more work but so much simpler.

    maybe i wasnt clear in how i explained it. let me try again.

    in the photo we see two cams.
    one is inlet, one is exhaust

    see how the cam has the sprocket in the middle of it.
    this effectively splits the cam in to left/right sides and it has 2 cam holders on it per cam shaft


    so, when removing the cam shaft, and working in a diagonal rotation, do we undo the left side cam holder then the right side cam holder?

    or use some imagination and pretend the cam holders are not two, but one giant one and work around them diagonally so they both get undone together at the same time?

    hope this helps make it clearer as the manual is a a bit vague.it just says undo them diagonally

    The object is for the either inlet or exhaust cam to come out or go back in level.
    Therefore I would use the imaginary scenario as this is the only way for it to remain level.
    At factory level a rather large hydraulic tension er with a dozen sockets attached does this task, the whole cam comes down perfectly level. Hope this helps.

    You've probably done it by now but treat them as one holder and undo em diagonally (ala quarter turn on a bolt in the left holder, quarter on a bolt in the right holder etc). If one is taken out entirely it'll probably warp the other holder as its only thin cast aluminium :)

    Don't forget to check every single bolt for stretching too. Even a little bit too much torque on them will noticably do so. Removing stuck bolts is not fun 8(

    not done yet, wont be doing it for a few more weeks yet, but just wanted to clarify it all before i do anything ;)
