The locks on my bike are a bit screwy! I have a hard time getting it to the steering lock position and it wont even open my fuel tank. ive tried but just ended up bending the key. i need to use a flathead to open it. lol.
Anyways ive just ordered a new set of locks from http://www.importmc.com.au for $220. I know i can get them alot cheaper from a wrecker but dont feel cofortable buying second hand locks. You wouldnt put second hand locks on your house doors would you?
theyre sending it down COD which i thought was cool.
Anyways, is this a big job that i should get a mechanic to do, or do you reckon a newbie like me can do it myself without messing it up and destroying my bike, lol

not sure about the difficulty of putting locks in. Check out the fzr400 manual available from teh main pages of this site. It won't be any different.

Also - you should get some graphite powder (available at any hardware store). It does wonders to 'loosen' up stubborn locks. I was having sever problems with the locks on my bike (not quite as bad as you), squirted some graphite in, and fine ever since. A bottle costs about $5. After your new locks are installed you should squirt a touch in them.

On the topic of locks - I have been told is never to use oils or things like wd40 in locks. This will loosen the lock in the short term, but over the longer term it will attract dust and grime and end up making the locks unworkable. This is the reason for graphite - it isn't a liquid and doesn't attract grime etc. (lock-oil is fine for locks that are not regularily exposed to the elements as it is a very very light oil and will not attract much stuff)

Definetly worth a try...It cleans the locks out pretty good.

When you do spray graphite in use your key gently. Insert/extract the key a few time (to get graphite over most of the pins and throughout the barrel), then turn the key slowly. I would avoid the wheel lock initially until the rest of the lock starts to feel comfortable. I 'squirted' some graphite on the ground first just to get an idea of how much comes out on each spray - I didn't want to fill up the lock with graphite.

It may work, may not. But for a $5 investment it is worth a try (and besides - a bottle of graphite will essentially last a lifetime).

well guys, losing my key motivated me to go to the post office and pay the c.o.d to get my set of 3 locks and a key. Cost $237 all up including postage and c.o.d charges. when i got home and opened it i saw they we USED!!!! the tank cover they gave me was all scratched too. I should have just gone to the wreckers. ARRRGH!
Even though they didnt say it was new they didnt state they were used. i assumed i was buying new. Not happy Jan!
