In aviation engines that are air cooled four strokes, the recommended maximum temperature for cylinder head temperature (CHT) is usually around 400°F or 204°C. A quick internet search yields an average 2-stroke engine should never exceed 450°F or 232°C. In my opinion, it's best to read a new spark plug after a hard WOT pull while making note of the CHT, immediately shut off the engine so the mid and idle circuits don't foul the spark plug color, read the color, and repeat the process until the correct mixture is found as read from the "Color" of the spark plugs ceramic just below the center electrode. This will be your optimum mixture and will correspond with your CHT (At that altitude, that day's humidity, temperature, pressure of course.) I'm sure that if properly tuned, the only time you'll see anything above 400°F will be in hard, flat-out WOT situations, or extremely hot days while moving very slowly through traffic or trails as most of the time, two strokes aren't really two strokes until they are in their narrow little power bands due to the intake charge contamination from the exhaust not scavenging well at low RPMs.
