Every now and then (maybe 1 out of 5 times) my across won't start with the electric start. Starts easy with a push start then fine after a short ride. What's the first thing to be looking at? The electronics are all lit up and the solenoid for the boot works so it has some charge... Not sure if it could be wiring, starter, not enough charge for the starter or something else entirely. Also, is the push starting going to do any damage? Cheers in advance guys, I'd be lost without this forum haha
Push starting can be hard on the clutch and transmission, it's best to clutch start in 2nd gear. Just roll it in neutral (easier), as soon as you have decent speed, kick it up to 2nd, open throttle a bit, pop the clutch out and once it fires pull clutch in and keep the revs just above idle. As for why... my bet is carbies. However it won't hurt to have a compression test and leak down test done
When it wont start on those 1 out of 5 times, what does it do, can you hear clicking in the relay , do you lights dim ? Its could be a battery on its way out, it could be a sticking relay, could be the starter motor having excess wear on the brushes
Can hear fuel pump do it's thing but nothing from the starter. Couldn't notice the dimming of lights in daylight but I'll take notice next time it happens. Battery was new 5-6 months ago. I'll have a look through when I pull it apart for the carbies and have a good look.
I have had the problem before (not on my current bike) and just sprayed a bit of WD40 into the switch and pressed it a few times to try and clear some gunk etc. Worked fine for me, didn't have a problem after that.
