Well I just got home after pushing my bike about a km - aaaargh!
Rode to the supermarket (about 3km) and when I came back the battery
was dead so I push started it myself and headed off home. The engine cut out again as I was slowing towards an intersection and again I had to push start it. This happened once more before before I gave up and hoofed it. The battery is either stuffed I guess or maybe it isn't being charged properly? Otherwise why would it cut out when I've got the engine running and am cruising along? I feel an expensive little trip to the mechanic coming on....

man i had the exact same problem. Well the battery isn't being recharged properly by the charging s ystem and causing this problem. well my problem was my alternator and I am in the process of getting one from england.

Go to this site it will help you locate your fault. iT WORKED FOR ME

i also had the same problems....thought it was the rectifier...check if all the diodes are good...(the fzr 400 manual shows u how). Might be a combination of the battery and the chargine system. I cleaned the the ground point from the rectifier and that improved it heaps. Should be getting over 13 volts charge at say 4,000 revs (roughly) And if u need a battery..ive got a spare one for the fzr. Charge is I think around 12.8v.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the charging system is stuffed (thanks for the help).
I checked the voltage across the battery when the engine was up to 5000rpm and it was only 12.5 - compared to 12.9 when the engine was off. This means the system is draining the battery, yeah? Would this eventually cause the engine to stall?
My next question is, where is the rectifier/regulator and alternator? And are they expensive to replace?

    CHARGING SYSTEM

The regulator/rectifier unit is located behind the side panel on the rear brake side, try cleaning up the earth connection to the frame bracket and use some copper grease on the terminals. The alternator is behind an engine casing same side, just follow the wiring cable, price wise test the original parts first .

All I did was clean up those connections (specifically the ground) And now its chargive above 13 volts which is alright...the rectifiers (lil box on the frame near the seat is expensive..they want like 80 bucks at wreckers for a second hand one..around 140 new)

Spot on boys. I found the regulator and it tested OK with a multimeter - so I cleaned all the electrical connections I could find and the charging has gone up from low 12V to over 14V! Still got a problem with the odd stall at idle but at least I've got a charged battery to start it again! Thanks for the tips.

yeah would be up for a ride round end of November. My school/uni days a are over so anytime is OK. Only problem is bike is still playing up - engine still patchy at idle and stalling occasionally at the lights - makes you look like a bigger noob than you actually are. Still - when i'm moving - its wicked when you see a gap in the traffic up ahead and you just rev the arse out of it and fang through -
but of course I'm a learner so I don't do that...
