gday been reading this for about a year now finally got around to registering. found this site to be the best information as no written info seems to exist in aus! thanks!

just wondering if anyone else has tried this.

melted a piston so had to replace the lot. got a wreck and started grafting. several interesting points:-

change sump to earlier model. oil filter on the side of the 3ln sump strikes the side stand. oil ports actually the same inside 3ln sump just carries the oil to the filter and pressure switch via another port.

use the 2kr the carbs (at least the intake manifolds) the 3ln carbs MAY fit but the airbox is way different as is the intake manifolds. drill & tap (5mm hole, 6mm tap) for two bolts for both inside manifolds as 3ln manifold bolts are slightly offset. they have used the same casting just stretched it to offset 3ln bolt holes.

use the 3ln exup it is lighter and smoother bore. entire exhaust will fit into original brackets. use 3ln exup cables. even the muffler bolts to 2kr brackets

little bit of simple fiddling with connections like starter motor + cable mount. simple enough anyway

2kr black box works fine with new motor

2kr throttle cable and clutch cables are fine

if anyone else has tried this let me know I did it from scratch with no help (even lifted the bastard in myself no pully) so can't be too hard just wanna know any other experiences. japs are predictable- don't want to change the block just everything around it. the 3ln frame is actually built to suit the old motor!

just hope this helps someone as much as this site has helped me. cheers

ps got my seats recovered in leather and padded out my ass is thanking me heaps

    welcome!

I was always under the impression that the 2kr and 3ln shared the same motor (1hx I think is the badging on the motor). Given your experiences - can you confirm or deny this? I am just wondering because I was never given the opportunity to actual compare motors side by side.

yeah i have put a lot of work into it- especially since i bought it 6 months ago and only did 2500 k's on it b4 meltdown..

the best i can say bout the motors being the same is the castings are the same, the oil ports are the same, the exhaust and intake ports are the same (with the minor bolt offset on the intake side) apparently the power outputs are the same, the motor sprocket- same, starter motor and related gearing etc etc. just minor updates in the 3ln version. even the mounting bolts are the same- with a couple of extra on the 3ln version not used in 2kr frame. it all bolts up just the same as the old motor.

i'm even keeping the 12 good valves, buckets, cams etc from the 2kr head as they apparently are- you guessed it- the same!

yeah the fzr is up & running waiting for inlet manifolds ($44.00 each x 4!) from japan then balance carbs, unifilter etc.

just the usual suspects with problems- sticky exup, little rattly. but so far so good.

Yeah i need to get some new intake manifolds. The rubber is starting to crack on the outsides, it looks like its been taken for a spin down the beach at low tide or something <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> . $44x4 sounds a bit rich, do you know if you can get them from the import place up your way or from mikuni or somthin?

the supplier (import motorcycle centre slacks creek brisbane) has upped the price heaps from $44.00 each.

Southern Cross Sports Victoria tel. (03) 9458 3239 is very good carries stock of most parts for most imports- and is bloody cheap on some! front disk new $150.00 2kr sigle disk, compared to $300 elsewhere!

$55.00 each for the intake manifolds

there is a place here called 'aweswome discs' (in Ringwood - 03 9879 7755) who make discs for any make / model of bike. They are supposedly superb! Also cheap (about $170 per disc rather than the yamaha $300). You already found a good place, but this is just an alternative.

try southern cross but they have none in stock for the 3ln at the moment 2 weeks wait looking for myself to see if i can find cheaper. don't bother with wreckers- want to charge up to 30 each and they are still hard & cracked. sick of wasting my time seeing them when over the phone they reckon they are still good
